First families move into Dubai's $299m Sustainable City project

Diamond Developers, the company behind Dubai's AED1.1 billion ($299 million) Sustainable City, has said it has welcomed its first set of tenants to the ecological and environmentally-friendly project.

Several families have made their home at The Sustainable City to date, with more expected to move in by the end of the year, the company said in a statement.

Each family will benefit from the homegrown produce in the community farm and will receive fresh herbs from the two operational biodome greenhouses on a regular basis, it added.

The number of residents living in Sustainable City is expected to increase significantly by April when the city's community mall is completed and all 11 biodomes are up and running.

The new tenants' homes are located in phase one of the development, which comprises a five-cluster residential complex, with each cluster featuring pedestrianised streets, a communal area, five playgrounds, a central wind tower and solar-shaded parking lots.

Alongside its biodomes in the central green spine and community mall, phase one is also home to an equestrian centre with horse, cycling and jogging tracks.

500 Villas in Dubai Now Produce Their Own Electricity

Step by step, the process of greening in Dubai has begun. In a landmark initiative, Dubai's Sustainable City has announced that the villas are now successfully producing clean and sustainable energy using 'Solar Power Panels'. The Sustainable City is, therefore, the first residential project in Dubai to produce clean energy for over 500 villas, which are spread out over five residential clusters, and which comprise of many amenities, reported an article in Emirates24X7.

Anwar Zebn, CEO of City Solar, the main contractor for all energy production at The Sustainable City said in the article, "We have already installed 12 per cent of a total of 40,000 solar panels, which are distributed on villas throughout the residential complex, and which will produce up to 10 megawatts of power at maximum capacity."

"Energy production will reach 1.2 MW, with surplus energy stored in Dewa's Grid, to be later drawn upon to operate more than 200 villas with clean renewable energy. The energy produced hourly per year will be equivalent to 2,000MW, which will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions by a thousand tonnes per year," he added.
