As tournesol mentioned in the Ørestad thread, they are planing a golfcourse in Ørestad. Well, today berlingske reports that all the permits have been given and the construction started last week. They have also spoken to the devoloper, who talks about his plans.

First up, we are not just talking about a little normal course. They plan to build a course that can compete with the best of them. The ambition is to be a regular feature on the european tour, and to host the Ryder Cup in 2018.

Only one guy is behind it all, and he insist on building the best course he can, with no compromises and then worry about the cost later. To start of, he has hired one of the best golfarchitects, Ron Kirby, to design the course. He is the man behind Gleneagles, the host of the 2014 ryder cup.

The court will be build to meet the international standarts, and be a so-called Target-course. Dont ask me what it is, but it has something to do with the design. It does mean that the audience capacity will be 30-40.000, without problems for the players. Since the court is being build fra new, it means that they are able to draw all the tv cables needed underground, and that they will build a helicopter pad on the roof of the clubhouse, just in case Tiger Woods is in a hurry.

The court, at 120 HA, will have 7 lakes, and more then a million tons of durt will have to be moved around to make elevated greens. The combined lenght of the course will be 6.545 meters.

The course will open in steps, the first one being the drivingrange with 72 stalls in glass and steel, a locker room with cafe and tv lounge. This is expected to open in april 2006. About 1 year later, in april 2007, a 9 hole course will open.

And finaly, on the 1st of August 2009, the 18 hole championship course will open. At the same time will be the opening of the new clubhouse, of 2600 m2, with a restaurant seating 600 people...And the helicopter pad i guess...

The Royal Copenhagen Golf Center will execpt members, but expect to pay up to 100.000 danish kroners to get in, and an anual fee of 15-20.000 kroners...

Interesting.. Can you imagine if they used the same approach when building skyscrapers?

How come they are allowed to use "royal" in the name? What kind of relation does it have to the royal family?

Yeah...or just building in general...

Like most other things with royal in their name, there is no relation to the royal family. I dont even think they play golf...Anyways, the major problem with the name, was with the famous Royal Copenhagen brand, but i guess they worked it out...

Wow. Golf is really becomming huge in Denmark. My dad said about 11 years ago before we moved to Canada, Denmark only had like 10 golfcourses which were all 9-hole courses .. that was it ... Now there are over 150 golf courses in Denmark where, if i remember correctly, about 90% of them are 18-whole courses
:eek2:

Theres also another 18-whole golf course being designed by a world famous golfcourse-architect, Robert Trent Jones jr, whos designed more than 200 golfcourses in 38 different countries. He's designing 'Skjoldenæsholm Golfbane' which is planned to be finished within sometime 2006.

Anyways, back to the topic... Great news :D Ørestad is really turning out wonderful!

None at all, the name is a sham. I really can't understand why the name passes without consequense. It is bordering to a hoax, and could easily cast an undignified light on the city in general.

CPHdude,

I never imagined that you would be superficial to the point of idiocy. The word Royal means Royal, and that means something, if you're a Japanese tourist visiting a kingdom! Anybody in Rock Springs, Wyoming, USA, can call anything they like royal something. But not here. The major problem with the name is that it falsely purports to be the Royal Golf Club, which would be the club where the royal family plays golf, or at least the golf venue, that has special attention of the royal family. Which it isn't, never has been, and possibly never will be. The entrepeneur is effectively lying, and we're allowing him to do it. Why can we be so naive as to suppose that such negligance with important "signal" names won't harm us, as well as the city of Copenhagen, as it will rightly and deservedly do so in this case. Nobody likes to be screwed. Nobody.

Kristoffer Mogensen

No I found it at www.danskgolfdesign.dk

And regarding the name... There are so many places/things in Denmark that has the word "royal" in its name.. like Hotel Royal in Århus, Royal Scandinavian Casino, Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in CPH, The Royal Danish Academy of Music, the Royal League (football), and so on.
None of these really have anything to do with the Royal Family. It's just a name.. I don't consider it a "status" like it used to be.

Which is pretty much what i said. I dont know what your problem is dude, but you need to take the arrogance down a nutch...Not everybody who disagrees with you is an idiot, and you are not the smartest person in the world. Like other people have mentioned a lot of companies call themself royal something. And i doubt that every turist will brake down in tears when they find out thet the royal family is not the owners...And as far as the royal family playing there, why not? The crown prince and princess Mary both play golf, and this is planed to be certanly the best court in Denmark, with great VIP facilities...So why wouldnt the royal family, or some of them, play there??

So back of, and stop calling me an idiot for simply posting the facts. Nobody is interested in that....

exactly...

anyways, they have a few pic on the page, of the building, but nothing about the final court....They do have a long destription of the project, and it does look pretty good...
I wonder how the "landscape" of this course will be .... (flat, bumpy/hilly, etc.) I notice a lot of the times when I see professional golf on TV they play on flat- courses.. Which is weird to me .. Courses with a lot of bumps/hills (like the Skjoldenæsholm Golfbane which i showed a few pictures of earlier) seems like a more professional/more difficult course than one thats completely flat..

try and go to their website and download the info brochure...That tell a lot about the court, and the projekt...and they have something on the site too...
Hmm, I'm not a fan of golf courses squeezed in in a middle of a commercial/residential area. The course itself seem to be a killer tho. Why build it in the middle of Örestaden?

because it is probebly the only place in copenhagen thats big enough....
You mean that it is impossible to place it outsite the city? Barsebäck Golf and Country Club, probably the best golf course in northern Europe, is counted as a "Malmö course", though it is situated some 20-25 km:s outside the city.

I think it would get a lot more business though if it was in the city. People are very lazy now-a-days and a lot of them don't want to drive 20km to play golf. I like the location though. It's nice for Copenhagen to have a little bit of nature around it :)
Well, yeah in a business aspect it is probably better to place it in the city. But I'm sure the course is going to be "worse" when it is surrounded by busy freeways, metro-tracks, the Bella Center etc.

That area is not a part of the area reserved as a part of Ørestaden. So it is actually a new thing that they are going to build anything in that spot.
