Psyche Clothes Store owner plans
futuristic Middlesbrough Hotel

November 14th 2007, by Alli Pyrah, Evening Gazette

The owner of Teesside clothes store Psyche has launched a formal bid for planning permission to build a futuristic hotel on top of his Middlesbrough shop.

Psyche owner Steve Cochrane is seeking permission from Middlesbrough Council for the three-storey extension to the store in Linthorpe Road, which will include a rooftop restaurant and glass elevator offering panoramic views of the Tees Valley.

Its 42 bedrooms, each decorated in the style of a different fashion designer, are expected to cost in the region of £100 for a twin room or £150 for a suite per night.

They will be constructed off-site as a series of pods, which will then be fitted together on top of the building. “We are trying to make a very iconic landmark building which is very prestigious and is going to help regenerate the area,” said Steve.

“Middlesbrough is notoriously under-developed as far as hotels are concerned. We get a lot of people visiting and so does the university and places like The Mall and the occupancy rate for The Thistle is very high.

He has also contacted the producers of the Channel 4 property development programme Grand Designs to see if they would be interested in featuring the project on their show.

The extension would take the Psyche building, which currently has 35,000sq ft of retail space, up to 60,000sq ft.

Anyone who wishes to comment on the application can do so online at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk or by writing to the planning department of Middlesbrough Council, PO Box 99A, Town Hall, Middlesbrough, TS1 2QQ.

I remember adding this into the original Full Summary of projects threads way back in 2007. I had hoped that this would go ahead, but had written it off now.

Linthorpe Road is the most vibrant place in the area at the moment, and if it was to be built as the render shows, i think this could be fantastic!!!

Approval for £5m hotel plans at Psyche in Middlesbrough
by Sandy McKenzie, Evening Gazette
Feb 12 2011

PLANS for a £5m hotel and restaurant development at Middlesbrough’s Psyche store have been given planning consent for a further three years.

Under new planning rules Psyche applied to replace the previous planning consent for the hotel and restaurant development, which has now expired, with a new permission for the next three years.

The plans propose a fourth floor being added to the Psyche building, which was the former Uptons department store.

A further two storeys would be added in the form of a cantilevered extension. It would be independently supported with piers set into the ground in Garnet Street and Pelham Street.

Steve Cochrane, managing director of Psyche, says the development remains very much part of his plans.

The proposed hotel would have 39 bedrooms and the restaurant would have 250 covers.

Psyche has been named runner up to Harrods in the Drapers Fashion Awards beating the likes of Harvey Nichols

Teesside department store proves a hit at fashion Oscars
by Sophie Barley,
Evening Gazette
Dec 2/12/2011

FORGET Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and John Lewis - the best department store in the North is nestled in the heart of Teesside.

Psyche in Middlesbrough has been voted the Drapers Fashion Awards runner-up best department store in the country - losing out to London’s Harrods.

Other stores in the country were left trailing while Psyche was praised for recent investment in the Linthorpe Road store.

Psyche was first opened in 1982 in a small premises in Linthorpe Road by Steve Cochrane, just selling menswear. He then expanded the shop into another premises, creating a ladieswear section, before buying the spot where the store now stands.

It is now an established brand with annual sales of £4m.

The premises covers 35,000sq ft over three floors.

There are also plans to make a £5m hotel and roof-top restaurant above the building.

Paulo Capaldi, marketing manager, said: “We were really pleased when we were runner-up department store of the year.

“The Drapers are like the fashion Oscars and to be named ahead of Harvey Nichols was great for us. We have put a lot of investment into the store and I think that was why we were praised the way we were.
