Purnea Airport is a proposed Civil Enclave at Purnea Air Force Station. The airport serves whole of western Bihar and also a huge chunk of Northern West Bengal. It was built in 1956 for supplies to the Indian Army in Sino-Indian War. The airport then received commercial service in the 80's and 90's which were subsequently shut down.
In 2017 realising the need for air service in the region a Civil Enclave was proposed at Purnea Air Force Station. As land acquisition began there was severe opposition to the project and land acquisition was abandoned after acquisition just 17 acres of the total 52.8 acres. The matter was pending at Patna High Court for many years due to cases filled by the farmers who objected to acquisition of their land. In February 2022 a PIL was filled in Patna High Court regarding the development of aviation infra in the state. Taking cognizance of the matter Patna High Court directed the District Administration to complete the land acquisition at the earliest. Accordingly the pending land acquisition was completed in the next 2-3 weeks and is currently being transferred to AAI. The Civil Enclave is expected to handle ATR 72/Q400 sized aircrafts in the first phase.
