Qatar Bids for ‘Olympics’ of Oil and Gas Industry

QATAR is one of the contenders to host the 20th World Petroleum Congress in 2011 and if successful would bring one of the industry’s most prestigious events to the Middle East for the first time.

The United Kingdom and Turkey are also bidding for the honors to host the event which is held every three years and attracts thousands of delegates. Members of WPC national committees will vote at a council meeting in Uruguay late this year.

Qatar’s national committee sees the strength of its bid lay in the fact that the country has such a wealth of experience in hosting large scale events, conferences and exhibitions, most recently demonstrated with the highly successful 15th Asian Games.

By 2011 the infrastructure in Doha would have been improved even further with the addition of an extra 5,000 5-and 4-star hotel rooms, a world class exhibition center which would be one of the largest and most modern in the region and delegates would arrive at Doha’s new international airport.

In terms of the industry Qatar will be one of the world’s major energy centers as the number one producer and exporter of LNG, be the capital of the gas-to-liquids industry, as well a leading producer of fertilizers and petrochemicals.

His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry and Chairman of Qatar Petroleum threw his full support behind Qatar’s campaign for 2011.

“It was Qatar’s very great pleasure to host the WPC Second Regional Meeting in December 2003 and its successful staging is a testament to the excellent facilities and the organization skills we have in Doha,” H.E. Al-Attiyah said. “Since then we have also hosted LNG 14 in 2004 and the 10th International Energy Forum in April 2006.”

“Qatar is such an attractive destination for delegates given its rapidly changing industrial landscape and the extraordinary business opportunities in our energy and industry sector. Every year there are new refining, LNG, and petrochemical plants coming on stream and many of them are the largest and most technologically advanced facilities of their kind in the world. We are also now a leader in GTL will come on line.

“By 2011 Doha will almost be unrecognizable to those of you who attended the Second Regional Meeting. New five star hotels and skyscrapers are rapidly rising from the sands in response to the demand from the booming economy. Nevertheless you will still find the same warm Qatari hospitality.

“It would be an honor for Doha to be chosen as the venue of 20th Congress in 2011 and for Qatar to be selected to host the first World Petroleum Congress to ever be held in Middle East.”

In its 80 year history a Congress has never been held in the Middle East despite the region’s predominance in hydrocarbon reserves.
