Exhibited at Cube. Don't know the status of this proposal. Perhaps the Bods could clarify it. Interesting to see the plans to turn Discotheque Royal back into a theatre. (below) Is this SB's (sure it was them) second proposal for this small site?

I quite like that but there is a danger of turning Manchester into a City of London clone with over development.

Even so I still like it, there's an element of Tokyo in there.
Is this a vision or a serious possibility?
top stuff jerb.

is that a massing model i see for whitworth street west site in one of the models?

also, what is that between the 28 storey tower and the midland hotel?

basically this-

so that tower and the 28 storey tower? nice...

Listen Richard Rogers is likely to get the sack from GLA, Boris wants to stop skyscrapers in the centre.

So I doubt that we will now be like Landan.

Anyway is this serious? Is it a theatre or another conference centre or just another interesting skyscrapercity in town.

How big a theatre is this going to be. Is there a market for another such venue in Manchester. Sure I can very easily see the grim Apollo being pulled down and replaced ASAP. But a 650 seater. Erm. Another Lowry or a posh Band on the Wall? Not sure about a Victorian envelope. Is that another phrase for a BJ or its a nod to the two Victorian style politicians - Gordon and Boris - that we have to endure for the next few years.

And oh drop the Royal bit if you want to be taken serious.

This is Petersfield eh!
This is by Stephenson Bell isnt it?
Its not going to happen.

That is the now empty London and Scottish House Comdot. Apparently to be demolished. Article below.

Yep! No? Shame. Explains why it's on show.
Wasn't this his first attempt? (below) Wasn't viable due to the small floor plates x cost of construction. So what's this other proposal about? SB doesn't seem to be having much luck what with Fountain Street and the slow progress of Chetham's new school opposite Victoria Train Station.

Comdot for my sanity I am trying to put a north korean news block on anything to do with Boris. It wouldnt last. Bit like Stevie Bell ideas.

Now Dick Rogers - the 21st century tall buildingman would be a coup for Manchester.

Because there are prizes for 'Unbuilt Projects' i'm guessing and there are also lots of examples of 'proposals' in the show that are competition entries or just valuation exercises.

I'm still struggling to understand that comment :)
Looks very similar to the Fountain St scheme , its only a matter of time before this site gets developed .
Cheers comdot

Let them rot I say if thats what they aspire for
All looks very conceptual at the moment. They've plonked a version of their fountain st proposal next to their competition entry for Mosely St.

Am not liking this trend for tall buildings sneakily invading the public realm by employing large cantilevered sections a few storeys up. Feels opporessive. Personally Id like to see any proposal for these sites respecting the established building line.

Interesting you should say that Sleepy. When I first looked at those images I came to the exact opposite conclusion you did. For me this kind of building would actually increase the availability and quality of public realm on Mount Street.

One of my pet hates is the raised planters we see in front of this building (and formerly Xerox House). I really don't see how the space can be properly described as public realm. To my mind the true foot print of this building extends to the edge of this impenetrable island.

In these kind of tight city centre spaces I'd much rather see usable public space at ground level with offices hovering three for four storeys overhead, than raised litter collection troughs used only by rats and pigeons with sky above.

Plus the the cantilevered solution works quite nicely for the London Scottish site for financial reasons. It allows ground level space to given over to the public without jepodising the viability of the project. Lets face it, given the state of the economy right now and the fact Irish investors recently paid £20m for the building, the site is going to struggle to earn its keep. If we want to maintain momentum in city centre development, investors have to be allowed to make a profit - and for this site, that means 200,000 sq ft of office space.
