Sounds fun! Asheville is doing the same thing with our rework of Pack Square and City-County Plaza. To build ours, they're simply using the natural downard slope of the current City-County Plaza down from Pack Square to the Buncombe County Courthouse and City Hall. Does the Raleigh plan incorporate a natural slope, or is it all going to be manmade?
I'm pretty sure it'll be man made...however the article said something about digging it out for the convention center? so maybe they'll get the slope they need while building the new convention center.
I like the idea, too. DT Raleigh needs a feature like that. I am not sure about the location, but I know that there are a few more [good] options that the city should examine before constructing that amphitheater. On the other hand, we have to make sure that the South-West side of DT Raleigh gets a share of the future pedestrian traffic that the city wants to see for the South End.
