BUS services under the new Rapid KL Area 3 network that covers Pandan and Hulu Kelang will continue despite a call by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) to postpone the launch of the bus system.

Rapid KL chief operating officer (bus operations) Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said he had contacted council president Datuk Ahmad Shafii Saidin to explain to him about the bus system.

“We explained that we had already started service in Areas 1 and 2 and are now proceeding with Area 3 and by June we will complete the whole coverage.

“We (Rapid KL and MPAJ) agreed that we would proceed with the launch but the network and infrastructure are not complete yet. We will have further discussions with MPAJ to finalise issues such as improvement of infrastructure,” he said.

The council called for a postponement of the bus service at its full board meeting on Thursday, saying it needed time to study the system.

Ahmad Shafii, who was apparently upset that he and the councillors were not informed of the new Rapid KL system, said the council wanted to look at the details and give its views.

Following the introduction of the Areas 1 and 2 bus networks over the past four months, Rapid KL launched the Area 3 network on Sunday. Other areas covered under the Area 3 network are Ampang, Wangsa Maju, Keramat and Setapak.
Under the new system, commuters will only have to wait for 15 minutes for a local shuttle and switch to a trunk bus that runs at a 10-minute frequency to link to the five city hubs – KL Sentral, Titiwangsa, Medan Pasar, Maluri and KLCC.

From the hubs, they can take a city shuttle, with a 5-minute frequency, to get to their final destination.

Rapid KL answers request of ‘deprived’ commuters

KLANG Valley’s largest bus operator, Rapid KL, has begun a new City Shuttle service between KLCC and Pusat Bandar Damansara.

City Shuttle No.116, which began operating early this month, also covers Titiwangsa, Bukit Tunku and the Jalan Duta government offices.

A Rapid KL spokesman said the service was launched as a result of requests from commuters who lived in the eastern part of Kuala Lumpur, such as the Pandan and Ampang areas, and who worked in Jalan Duta and Pusat Bandar Damansara.

“The new service should meet their needs,” he said.

Buses depart from KLCC and travel along Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Tun Ismail (PWTC), Langgak Tunku, Jalan Duta, Jalan Semantan before getting to Pusat Bandar Damansara.

The return trip is along the same routes, but in reverse direction. The fare is RM2 and the ticket can be used on any City Shuttle bus for a whole day.

As the routes serve mostly officer workers, the spokesman said buses would depart from KLCC only at the following times: 6.30am, 7am, 7.30am, 8am, 8.30am, 9am, 9.45am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.15pm, 1pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3pm, 4pm, 4.30pm, 5pm, 5.30pm and 6pm.

“For those living in the Pandan area, they can catch Rapid KL local shuttle buses to Pandan Indan light rail transit station and take the LRT to Titiwangsa where they can switch to City Shuttle No.116 to Jalan Duta or Pusat Bandar Damansara,” said the spokeman.

Alternatively, commuters can take a local shuttle bus to Ampang Point, transfer onto a trunk bus to KLCC and then catch the City Shuttle No. 116.

Those living in Ampang can make their way to KLCC using local shuttle and trunk buses to catch City Shuttle No. 116.

Otherwise, they can use local shuttle buses to Ampang LRT station, take the LRT to Titiwangsa where they can catch the City Shuttle No.116.

The spokesman also said several changes had been made to City Shuttle routes No.102 and 111, as well as Local Shuttle No. 219.

The changes are:

City Shuttle No.102 between Titiwangsa and Medan Pasar now does a U-turn under the Jalan Ipoh flyover and proceeds along Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Pahang after leaving Titiwangsa instead turning left into Jalan Ipoh,

City Shuttle No.111 between Maluri and Medan Pasar now serves Jalan Peel instead of Jalan Cheras,

Local Shuttle No.219 from Metro Prima in Kepong has now been extended to the Segambut KTM Komuter station. The route previously ended at Jalan Lang Emas in Taman Sri Sinar.

The going looks good for new bus network

By LEONG SHEN-LI

[email protected]

KLANG Valley's biggest public transport operator, Rapid KL, believes its revamped bus network, which has been operating for the past four months, is on the right course and working well.

Rapid KL chief executive officer Rein Westra said after an initial drop in the number of passengers, it had picked up since the revamp.

“It is too early to say for certain, but there are signs that there has been a slight increase in the number of passengers,” he said recently.

The radical revamp of Klang Valley’s bus network involved removing the former single journey bus routes and replacing them with three types of buses – city shuttle, trunk and local shuttle buses.

Rapid KL is meant to complement the existing LRT services, a move that is a reason for the increase in the number of passengers lately.
City shuttle buses run every five minutes between five bus hubs inside and on the fringes of Kuala Lumpur’s central business district.

The hubs are at KL Sentral, Titiwangsa light rail transit station, KLCC, Maluri LRT station and Medan Pasar.

Trunk buses run from these hubs along major roads to regional hubs at strategic locations such as shopping centres outside the city.

Trunk buses, which run at 10-minute intervals, only stop at selected bus stops, thus improving journey times.

Local shuttle buses, meanwhile, fan out from regional hubs into residential areas. These buses run once every 15 minutes.

The city shuttle service was launched on Jan 16 while trunk and local shuttle bus services in “Area Two” (covering Kepong, Selayang, Batu Caves and Sentul) were launched on March 18.

On April 30, the bus network for “Area Three,” which included Setapak, Wangsa Maju, Hulu Kelang, Ampang and Pandan, was revamped.

The network in other areas will be revamped in phases and the entire process is to be completed in July.

At the moment, there are 16 city shuttle routes, seven trunk routes and about 50 local shuttle routes.

The revamp also saw a change in the ticketing system from single-trip tickets to whole-day tickets. A whole-day city shuttle and trunk bus tickets cost RM2, while local shuttle bus tickets cost RM1.

Westra...'the response is a pleasant surprise'
Westra said the number of passengers using the system exceeded previous levels a few weeks after the new routes were introduced.

“We anticipated a slight drop in numbers because this is what usually happens when bus routes are changed,'' he said. “But, exceeding previous levels so quickly is a pleasant surprise.”

Westra said the new system was the best method to improve public transport usage in the Klang Valley quickly without the need to drastically increase the bus fleet at an astronomical cost.

He said this “hub and spoke” concept, on which the new system is based on, had been implemented successfully in several cities in the world. In fact, the airline industry also uses a similar concept to ensure sufficient loads.

Westra said Rapid KL had implemented steps such as changing bus routes so that passengers need not cross roads at hubs, and building bus shelters so that changing buses would be more comfortable.

“External conditions, such as massive road works in the Kepong area, have in some areas thrown our timetables out of order,'' he said. “To overcome this, we have put in more buses to ensure that frequencies are kept.”

Over 600 bus stops with route information boards have also been set up at areas affected by the revamp.

Westra said Rapid KL would be working with local authorities to further improve bus stops, especially those in areas that had become regional hubs, and to create bus lanes to improve journey times.

Furthermore, more buses were on the way to boost Rapid KL’s fleet further.

On complaints over fares, Westra said commuters should realise that the new day pass gave them the freedom to move around anywhere all day long.

“Passengers are getting the mobility of a car for the price of a bus ticket,” he said.

Westra hoped that commuters would take the time to find the best possible combination of bus and light rail transit routes to move around.

“On our part, we will continue to respond positively to suggestions, adjust and change whatever that is necessary to ensure passengers get the best possible service.”

Thumbs up for new bus service

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KUALA LUMPUR: Since last Saturday, more than 40,000 passengers have enjoyed free rides on RapidKL buses. The three-day free ride was offered in conjunction with the launch of RapidKL’s new service network in the Serdang area.

Free rides were offered on 179 buses plying 37 routes, including Cheras, Bangi, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Serdang, Sri Kembangan, Sungai Besi and Balakong.
RapidKL officers, including bus operations general manager Khairuddin Sulaiman, were on the ground yesterday to gauge the feedback from the public. They were happy with the positive response.

Khairuddin said RapidKL would be replacing old buses in stages to ensure better service.

"So far, we have penetrated 70 per cent of the viable routes in the Klang Valley and there are plans to expand further."

Iranian Morteza Moghadam, 24, who takes RapidKL buses to his English classes at Limkokwing University College of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya, was impressed with the service.

"I came to Malaysia 10 days ago and started using public transport on my first day here. I am impressed with the cleanliness of RapidKL buses."

Razif Othman, 21, finds the buses convenient and cheaper than taxis for his trips to the Multimedia University.

NOT all passengers warmly receive Rapid KL’s new bus service although some say it is a welcome change.

What passengers find welcoming is the fact that buses are a lot more frequent and it is only RM2 for a ride in the city, no matter how many times you get onto a city shuttle.

Naturally, the biggest problem passengers have is with changing buses at transit stops to get to their destination. Some also say it is expensive.

Westra ... ‘the difference between the old network and new network system is that the old network goes from each residential area direct into the city centre’
Chief executive officer Rein Westra said Rapid KL used to have 26 routes in Area Four but from July 1 there were 32 local shuttles and four trunk lines.

“The difference between the old network and new network system is that the old network goes from each residential area direct into the city centre.

“The new network introduces three different systems – the local shuttle which traverses routes every 15 minutes, the main trunk line connecting residents from suburbs to the city hub with minimal stops every 10 minutes and the city shuttle offering a frequency of every five minutes,” Westra said.

What this means is that commuters are now required to do a lot more than sit on a bus, they also have to be alert, get off at the right stop and catch a connecting bus to the city – if that’s where they are headed.

The new bus system is divided into the local shuttle (obvious from its green board), main shuttle (blue board) and city shuttle (red board).
There are 178 buses for Area Four – 55 for the trunk line, 16 express buses and 107 local shuttles.

Although the service may seem cumbersome with having to change buses now and then, but the bigger picture is in offering frequency and connectivity in Rapid KL’s service by connecting the suburbs to the city.

Rapid KL corporate communications division senior manager Katherine Chew said more routes would be introduced to offer better connectivity in all areas and in Putrajaya.

Chief operating officer (bus operations) Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said Rapid KL would have over 1,000 new buses on its bus network system by the end of the year.

He said Rapid KL had 90,000 ridership daily on its bus network covering 4,000 sq m.

“We are not insisting that our system is the best but we want the public to try it and give their feedback,” he said.

Area Five (along Federal Highway and south of it towards Klang) and Area Six (north of the Federal Highway) will be launched sometime this month.

The main reason for building the bus network, Mohd Ali said, was to fill the gap in the entire bus system.

“This way, we have developed a network where we have integrated with all the rail stations – KTM and LRT, giving passengers connectivity to their destinations,” he said.

SPNB To Invest RM10 Billion To Improve Public Transport System

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB) is expected to invest RM10 billion between this year and 2010 to improve the public transport system in the Klang Valley.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in his Budget 2007 speech Friday, said the company was currently implementing a programme to increase the capacity of buses and urban rail as well as other infrastructure.

To expand urban rail services, SPNB was in the process of adding another 140 trains to its fleet, and extending the rail connections from Kelana Jaya to Subang Jaya and USJ as well as from Sri Petaling to Puchong, which is expected to be completed in 2009.

A new rail route was being planned for implementation, connecting Kota Damansara to Cheras, which was expected to be completed by 2010.

"A double-track commuter rail line from Sentul to Batu Caves will also be implemented by KTM Berhad. "With this, the urban rail in the Klang Valley will be extended to 264 kilometres from 206 kilometres and its ridership capacity increased from half a million to one million passengers daily," Abdullah said.

For the bus services, the Finance Minister said RAPID KL has begun to implement a new bus service network that would improve the integration between the bus and rail services.

Abdullah said that for this, more than 1,000 new buses would be purchased.

"When implemented fully by the end of this year, the new network would provide bus services to 980 housing areas, an increase of 53 per cent. At the same time, the waiting time will be reduced to between 15 to 30 minutes," he added.

Abdullah said it was the objective of RAPID KL to reduce the waiting time to 15 minutes for all routes by the end of this year. Abdullah also said that two integrated transport terminals for bus and rail would be constructed in Bandar Tasik Selatan and Gombak to alleviate traffic congestion in the Kuala Lumpur central business district.

To facilitate commuters using the public transportation, integration of tickets had been implemented with the usage of one-ticket system for all bus and rail services under RAPIDKL.

"This system is expected to be expanded to all public transportation systems in the Klang Valley," he said.

To assist taxi and bus operators to buy new vehicles, a Public Transport Development Fund would be established as a revolving fund under the SME Bank with an initial allocation of RM200 million.

This was in line with the current regulations that imposed a limit of seven years for taxis and 10 to 15 years for commercial buses, Abdullah said.

RapidKL Chief Operating Officer Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said the company had received only 100 new buses and was expecting more buses to arrive next week.

"After that, the relevant documents have to be approved by the authorities before putting the buses on the road," he told a press conference after a community briefing on the RapidKL operations in Klang here Saturday.

Areas to be serviced under the new road network are Klang, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Damansara, Petaling Jaya and Puchong.

Mohd Ali said RapidKL's service in new routes in Klang would commence before the year-end.

The routes are from Kapar to Klang, Bandar Puteri Klang to Seri Muda, Hentian Bandar Shah Alam to Klang, Seri Muda to Klang, Bandar Puteri to Klang, Taman Sentosa to Klang, Pandamaran to Klang and Klang to Taman Botanic.

Network bus service postponed

By JADE CHAN

RANGKAIAN Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd (Rapid KL) chief operating officer (bus operations) Mohd Ali Mohd Nor recently said that the launch of the new bus network service in Klang, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Damansara, Petaling Jaya and Puchong (Areas 5 and 6) had been postponed from Sept 16 to Sept 23.

He said this at a dialogue session chaired by Petaling Jaya Utara MP Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun. Present at the session were various Rukun Tetangga and Residents Association representatives, as well as Petaling Jaya (PJ) residents.

Mohd Ali ... urged commuters to try the new routes
The session was aimed at introducing the new bus network service around the PJ area, and providing an opportunity for the residents to voice out their problems concerning Rapid KL’s services.

“We need 250 new buses to commence the new bus network service, but we have received only 100. We are expecting more to arrive next week and after that approval for the necessary documents must be obtained for each bus before they are put on the roads,” said Mohd Ali.

He apologised to all Rapid KL users, especially those in PJ Utara, as the frequency has deteriorated lately due to a shortage of buses because of several old buses breaking down.

He assured commuters that steps were being taken to rectify the problem.

Mohd Ali added that the company would be planting 1,258 new bus stops with information panels in Areas 5 and 6 before the launch, and was working on creating proper shelter designs for the bus stops and hubs.

Under the PJ Utara bus network, there will be 13 local shuttle routes with eight routes to and from LRT stations, and one trunk line plying into Damansara from Bandar Utama to KL Sentral.

The local shuttle routes are 613, 614, 615, 616, 620, 622, 623, 624, 625, 626, 627, 628 and 629, while the trunk line route is T82.

Route 613 will service areas in Sections 6, 7 and 8 in Kota Damansara, Damansara Uptown and Bandar Utama, while Route 614 will connect Sections 4 and 5 in Kota Damansara to Bandar Utama.

Route 615 will link various areas in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Damansara Uptown to Bandar Utama, while Route 616 will ply from Damansara Utama to Kampung Kerinchi.

Route 620 will connect Kelana Jaya to PJ State, while Route 622 will link Taman Mayang Emas to the Kelana Jaya LRT station.

Route 623 will service areas in Sunway, Subang Parade and Batu 10, linking them to the Kelana Jaya LRT station, while Route 624 will ply from Stadium MBPJ to the Kelana Jaya LRT station.

Route 625 will connect SS6, SS5 and SS3 to the Taman Bahagia LRT station, while Route 626 will link Damansara Utama to the Taman Bahagia LRT station.

Route 627 will service areas in Kampung Tunku, Sungai Way and Section 51A to the Taman Paramount LRT station, while Route 628 will ply from Sections 14 and 17 to the Asia Jaya LRT station.

Route 629 will connect Eastin Hotel to the Asia Jaya LRT station.

The buses are expected to ply at a frequency of about 15 minutes, from 5.30am to 12.30-1am daily.

Trunk line Route T82 will connect Bandar Utama to KL Sentral, while trunk Route T43 will link Bandar Utama, IOI Mall, Tesco and Putrajaya to Bandar Utama.

The trunk line service frequency is every 10 minutes, from 5.30am to 12.30-1am daily.

Mohd Ali added that there would be a three-day free trial period from Sept 23 to 25.

Revenue service will commence from Sept 26 at RM1 for local shuttle, RM2 for trunk line service and RM2 for city shuttle. A comprehensive ticket for those who use the local shuttle, trunk line service and city shuttle is RM4.

The RM7 ultimate day pass ticket is valid for all Rapid KL buses and LRT services on the Kelana Jaya, Ampang and Sri Petaling lines.

Senior citizens, students in school uniform and the disabled will enjoy a concession.

Senior citizens must apply for the Rapid KL Senior Citizen Card and produce the card to be entitled to the concession.

The disabled get a 50% discount if they produce their OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) card, while those who have an OKU card and apply for the Rapid KL Handicapped Card will be entitled to free rides.

“We urge all commuters to try the new routes during the free trial period. We welcome all commuters’ feedback, and may adjust certain routes if the request is reasonable,” said Mohd Ali.

“I feel that PJ residents are finally getting a comprehensive public transport system,” said Chew, urging public to adapt to the new system.

“I’ve asked Rapid KL to set up a counter for senior citizens to apply for the Rapid KL Senior Citizen Card at the Senior Citizens’ Carnival on Oct 1 at SJK (C) Yuk Chai,” she added.

Commuters who wish to find out more about Rapid KL’s new routes or provide feedback can drop by any of the 20 bus hubs in Areas 5 and 6. The nearest hub in PJ Utara is at Bandar Utama.

Rapid KL’s new Klang Valley network

Friday September 15, 2006

Rapid KL’s new Klang Valley network

THE new bus network covering Klang, Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Damansara, Petaling Jaya, and Puchong will start on Sept 23.

Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd (Rapid KL) held a special briefing recently, attended by Kelana Jaya MP Loh Seng Kok and community leaders from Subang Jaya, USJ, and Bandar Sunway.

Rapid KL chief operating officer (bus operations) Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said the new network would consist of 10 routes and one trunk line.

“We need some 250 new buses to serve this new network, with the frequency of a bus every 15 minutes for the local shuttle and 10-minute wait for the trunk service.

“At the moment, we have about 100 new buses and are expecting more to arrive next week,” said Mohd Ali.

All local shuttles will start service from as early as 5.30am and end at about 12.30am or 1am.

“There will be three days of free trial service for residents from Sept 23 to 25, after which the normal fares will be charged,” added Mohd Ali.

The local service is priced at RM1, while the trunk line service and city shuttle are each priced at RM2.

There is also the Day Pass which is valid for unlimited travel within each service for the whole day.

“Passengers are free to travel all day long on one particular service without needing to pay extra.

“We also encourage the use of the Comprehensive Ticket for those who use more than two types of services because they can save an additional 20%. This ticket is at RM4 for all services - the local shuttle, trunk line, and city shuttle,” explained Mohd Ali.

The Ultimate Day Pass, priced at RM7, allows one the use of Rapid’s bus and rail.

Meanwhile, school uniformed students and senior citizens with the Rapid KL card are given 50% concession on local shuttle, trunk line, and city shuttle, while the comprehensive ticket is at RM3.

“Currently, the tickets are still manual, but we will be introducing Touch N Go cards by end of the year,” said Mohd Ali.

Loh commended the introduction of the bus service in view of Subang Jaya and USJ, part of his Kelana Jaya constituency, being among the elite areas which are most developed in Selangor.

“With now the LRT set to be extended from Kelana Jaya to Subang Jaya and the Putra Line from Sri Petaling to Puchong, I wish to propose for a connection to be made between Subang and Puchong as they are just neighbouring townships and this would make a more all-rounded network,” said Loh.

Residents gave their feedback particularly in matters concerning reliability of the buses.

“I understand residents concerns and in this first phase, Rapid KL is striving for reliable frequency in terms of timing,” said Mohd Ali.

“For areas which are low in density, we are probably looking at schedule trips instead, but this will probably come in place a few months down the road.”

He also commented on social effort for the disabled, adding that 100 disabled-friendly buses have been purchased for the convenience of these people.

“We are looking at building ramps and also working with associations to identify locations to send the 100 buses to,” added Mohd Ali.

Rapid starts new service covering PJ to Klang

By ESTHER CHANDRAN

AREAS 5 & 6, which make up one third of Rapid KL’s bus network system, will be launched today with free rides offered to commuters from tomorrowto Monday.

The official launch will be held at Sunway Pyramid.

Commuters are advised to hold on to their free tickets from the launch areas in Petaling Jaya, Damansara, Puchong, Klang, Shah Alam, Subang and Subang Jaya when trying out the local, trunk and city shuttle services.

The ticket is valid for a day.

Describing it as the biggest area under Rapid KL’s new bus network system, Rapid KL chief operating officer for bus operations Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said Areas 5 & 6 would have a total of 264 buses plying nine trunk lines (92 buses), 47 shuttle lines (162 buses) and one express line (10 buses).

Mohd Ali briefing the media on new bus routes under Areas 5 & 6.
The local shuttle frequents at a 15-minute interval while the trunk line takes 10 minutes.

There will be a total of 1,257 new bus stops with information panels to provide commuters with information on the routes and bus numbers.

Mohd Ali said the express line plying KL Sentral to Klang makes two stops at Batu 10 and Asia Jaya (Armada Hotel and Petaling Jaya Hilton).

“By Saturday (tomorrow), the old service in Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Puchong, Subang, Subang Jaya, Damansara and Klang comes to an end as the new service takes over,” he said at a media briefing at the Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd head office off Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday.

Mohd Ali said Rapid KL was preparing for the inevitable alternative in travel in the Klang Valley.

“By Sept 23 (tomorrow), Rapid KL’s basic bus network system will be in place.

“With the new system, we are giving our customers assurance in timing as timing was rather unpredictable with the old system,” he said.

He added that the bus network system formed the last mile in completing the existing rail network system.

“We have done comprehensive coverage of the rail system in the city centre and the bus network supports this system as our buses are connected to the rail.

“The rail system alone cannot take the movement of the Klang Valley’s 4.7 million population and that is why we have 26 trunk lines in place.

“The trunk line is similar to the rail as it caters to the main corridor,” he said, adding that the Federal Highway was an important corridor in Areas 5 & 6.

Mohd Ali said from September to March, the sub-trunk lines connecting to the urban areas would be introduced gradually.

Areas 5 & 6 also see the introduction of Rapid KL’s second sub-trunk line from Bandar Utama to Metro Prima in Kepong.

The first sub-trunk line was from Bandar Utama to Putrajaya.

Mohd Ali said when the entire bus network system was completed, Rapid KL would cover 979 housing estates whereas the old system serviced only 600 housing areas in the Klang Valley.

Since January, Rapid KL has launched

Area 1 with its city shuttle service covering areas in the city;
Area 2 - Rawang, Kepong, Batu Caves, Gombak and Selayang;
Area 3 - Taman Melawati, Hulu Kelang, Wangsa Maju, Setapak, Keramat, Pandan and Ampang; and
Area 4 - Cheras, Sungai Besi, Balakong, Seri Kembangan, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Serdang, Bangi, Kajang and Hulu Langat.

Major upgrade for RapidKL

Major upgrade for RapidKL

Updated : 26-03-2007
Media : The Star
Story By : N/A
via www.biznewsdb.com

PETALING JAYA: RapidKL is revitalising its bus network, which should see major improvements over the existing one that was introduced in January last year.

Without going into too much detail, RapidKL chief operating officer Mohd Ali Mohd Nor said the company would announce the improvements for the 4,000 sq km network it covers in the Klang Valley next month.
¡§For a start, the issue of too many transfers will be dealt with almost immediately. There will be minimal transfers,¡¨ he said.

Mohd Ali added that MPs and residential association heads of the six areas serviced by RapidKL buses would be briefed on the upcoming changes.

Mohd Ali is also inviting the public to provide feedback on what they expect from the bus company in order to convert car users to bus users.

¡§If you compare the network from what it was before we took over, there has been a lot of improvement. There is certainty in getting a bus now, with a 30-minute waiting time being terrible.

¡§So the question is, what are the public's expectations of a bus company in KL considering we are limited by certain factors,¡¨ he added.

Mohd Ali said the process of getting bus lanes approved was slow but should bus lanes work as they were meant to, then RapidKL would definitely be speedier and people could afford to wake up 30 minutes later for work.

¡§I don't think many people enjoy driving their cars into the city these days. But the only reason the bus is no better than the car is because buses also get stuck in traffic jams.

¡§One of the main purposes of RapidKL coming into the picture is to attract car users, but we need to know what they want and expect,¡¨ he said.

However, Mohd Ali admitted that it was a chicken-and-egg situation as long as there was no compelling reason for car users to switch.

¡§The public transport system has to be in place first with the proper infrastructure, then the different measures to push people towards public transport can be implemented.¡¨

Mohd Ali said RapidKL was getting to that stage of readiness, noting that ridership had increased by about 40% when the local, trunk and city shuttle services were introduced last year.

Faster travel on new buses

KUALA LUMPUR: If you are one of the commuters tired of frequent bus halts, despair not.

Passengers from Klang, Kajang and Putrajaya can now travel to the city centre faster and in comfort on RapidKL’s new long-haul buses.

"All express bus services for the three routes have a minimal number of stops, with travelling time taking an hour to 90 minutes," said its bus operations chief operating officer Mohd Ali Mohd Nor.

At a ceremony to unveil the new buses, Ali said the service had 39 buses, with 18 allocated for the express line from Putrajaya Sentral (E1), Kajang Terminal (E2) and Klang (E4) to Pasar Seni here.
