RapidBET to cut travel times by half
By NG SI HOOI Published: Wednesday January 6, 2010 MYT 6:56:00 PM

PUTRAJAYA: RapidKL will introduce its news Rapid Bus Expressway Transit (RapidBET) system on Jan 12, promising to cut travel times by half for some Klang Valley commuters.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said that with RapidBET, buses would use the less congested highways to link heavily populated areas to the city centre.

“Naturally, by using the highways, travel time is reduced as the highways are less congested than the normal routes.

“The service will have limited stops and rely on feeder buses and park-and-ride facilities to ensure sufficient commuters,” he told a press conference before the post-cabinet meeting at his ministry here Wednesday.

For this initial introductory stage, Ong said two routes would be implemented starting next Tuesday -- from Kota Damansara to KL Sentral and Pasar Seni via the Penchala Link; and Bandar Sungai Long to Pasar Seni via the Grand Saga Highway.

“Before the new system, the journey time from Kota Damansara to Pasar Seni was about two hours, and it is expected to take about 50 minutes to reach the destination after the implementation.

“The travel time between Bandar Sungai Long and Pasar Seni is about 85 minutes and it will be reduced to 50 minutes under the system,” he said.

He said the buses would run at 15 to 20-minute intervals during the morning and evening peak hours.

“Frequency and service periods will be increased at a later stage depending on the demand on each route,” he said.

Another two routes that had been identified and would be implemented later are Subang Mewah to Pasar Seni via New Pantai Expressway; and Sri Muda to Pasar Seni via Kesas.

Ong said he had come across commuters who took two hours to get to work and another two hours to get back home.

“We must reduce the travel time and then move on to (higher) levels of comfort,” he said.

Ong said the system was in line with the Government’s goal to increase the modal share of public transport in the Klang Valley from 10% to 25% by 2012.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad group communication general manager Ebi Azly Abdullah said the bus fare would remain the same, which was between RM1 to RM3, but the service would be better.
Highway buses in Klang Valley
By NG SI HOOI Thursday January 7, 2010

PUTRAJAYA: Travel time by bus within the Klang Valley will be cut by almost half when the Rapid Bus Expressway Transit (RapidBET) system swings into action on Tuesday.

“BET is our first step towards transforming bus services to be attractive and accessible for all commuters,” Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat told reporters before chairing his ministry’s post-Cabinet meeting here yesterday.

Under the RapidBET system, buses will utilise less congested highways to link heavily populated areas and the city centre.

“Naturally, by using the highways, travel time is reduced.

“The service will have limited stops and rely on feeder buses and park-n-ride facilities to ensure sufficient ridership,” he told a press conference.

Two routes will be implemented in the introductory stage – from Kota Damansara to KL Sentral and Pasar Seni via the Penchala Link; and from Bandar Sungai Long to Pasar Seni via the Grand Saga Highway.

Ong said he had come across commuters who took two hours to get to work and another two hours to get back home.

“We must reduce the travel time and then move on to increase the level of comfort,” he said.

Ong will be joining commuters on Tuesday to experience the expected “smooth” journey.

Ong said the system was in line with the Government’s goal to increase the modal share of public transport in the Klang Valley from 10% to 25% by 2012.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad’s group communications general manager Ebi Azly Abdullah said the bus fare would remain the same – between RM1 and RM3 – but the service would be better.
RapidBET bus system from KL to Kota Damansara and Sungai Long

KUALA LUMPUR: The RapidBET bus system routes from Kota Damansara and Bandar Sungai Long to Pasar Seni here was launched by Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on Tuesday.

The system, part of an overall plan to upgrade the speed and comfort of the Klang valley’s bus system, cuts travel time by half and is available at peak hours in the morning and evening at 15-minute intervals.
i believe rapidBET is just on trial operation since the 'real' BRT will only operated 2011/2012. so for trial there's no need to delay the time by making fussy 'open tender' as it may delay for at least 6 months to get started....
perhaps that is the case.

Just so everyone knows, the BRT are 3 additional routes. BET will still be operating and will not be upgraded to BRT by 2012.

Also, there is really no difference between RapidBET and the current E-buses.

In fact, bus E-1 also uses a 'underutilized expressway' (Maju Expressway) from KL to Putrajaya. Many other buses could easily use the toll highways if they wanted to but they choose not to.

RapidKL balik ke zaman bas mini
Oleh ROSMALINA ABD. KADIR 14 Januari 2010

BAS mini yang begitu popular di ibu kota satu ketika dulu sarat dengan pelbagai masalah perkhidmatan.

KUALA LUMPUR - Sekali pandang, bas Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn. Bhd.

Let down by missing buses

I USE Rapid KL buses on three routes from Puchong to my workplace in Kota Damansara.

If all the morning buses come on time, I am the first to arrive at work between 7.30am and 7.45am. But, at least once a week I am 30 minutes late when the first bus for the day, U43, is missing. The return journey from work using U88 from Kota Damansara at 5.30pm is beset with problems. Sometimes there are no buses for almost two hours while Metro buses are seen every 15 minutes. I am forced to take a Metro bus and pay to get home without undue delay though I use a Rapid KL monthly pass.

The Transport Ministry should regularly review and audit bus routes.

RM93 mill purchase that ended in scrap heap
By Hemananthani Sivanandam

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 9, 2010): The operator of RapidKL spent RM93 million to buy over 1,294 used buses from two bus companies in 2003, only to have most of them consigned to the scrap heap two years later.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd bought the buses from DRB-Hicom and Park May Bhd in 2003 but 1,139 of the buses were deemed unfit for operations and were de-commissioned in November 2005.

This was revealed by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) after its members visited a RapidKL bus ‘graveyard’ in Sungai Buaya, Rawang. The other ‘graveyard’ is in Serendah.

PAC chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid led the group, which included Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, Kepong MP Dr Tan Seng Giaw, who is also the PAC deputy chairman and Ledang MP Hamim Samuri. Accompanying them was Prasarana group managing director Datuk Idrose Mohamed.

Azmi told reporters the “official de-commissioning" of the buses was to be in 2008 but the buses were sent to the ‘graveyard’ earlier.

A tender was awarded to TAF Resources to sell the buses as scrap metal.

“Prasarana earlier estimated the scrap value to be RM4.4 million but to date, it has already received about RM6 million from selling the scrap,” said Azmi.

He said the prices of the scrap were based on the weight and the value of the parts that were salvaged.

He said the buses, which were registered from 1992 to 1998 were only evaluated professionally in 2007.

There were only 10 buses which were categorised in category A, which means they were in good condition.

The 2007 evaluation report estimated that on average, each bus was valued at about RM60,000 but it would cost RM200,000 to refurbish and repair it.

As such, it was a choice of repairing the buses at RM200,000 each or selling it off.

When asked if an evaluation was done prior to buying the buses, Azmi said there was but “we don’t know the rationale" for the purchase.

Sources said a simple roadworthy test was conducted to determine the condition of the buses at the time of deciding whether to decommission them.

“The buses were considered working condition if it can be driven for 5km without breaking down,” said sources.

The abandonment of the used buses was stated in the Auditor-General's Report 2008.

Azmi said the committee will review the AG's report against what they have found out, in a meeting tomorrow.

He could not reveal the exact losses suffered by Prasarana and did not confirm if the government-owned company will be called for questioning.

It was reported last year that Prasarana had incurred losses from 2005 to 2007, due to poor management. Accumulated losses as at Dec 31, 2007 was RM839.81 million. -- theSun

Dataprep subsidiary gets RM34.99m Rapid KL bus ticketing job
Written by Surin Murugiah Friday, 17 September 2010 17:57
http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/busi...-gets-rm3499m-rapid-kl-bus-ticketing-job.html

KUALA LUMPUR: DATAPREP HOLDINGS BHD []'s subsidiary has accepted the letter of award (LOA) from Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd for the implementation of a cashless bus ticketing system for Rapid KL Buses.

The company said on Friday, Sept 17, that its 55% owned Solsis (M) Sdn Bhd, had received the LOA dated Sept 7 for a contract value not exceeding RM34.99 million.

Dataprep said the scope of works include to design, installation and commissioning of the cashless bus ticketing system for Rapid KL Buses.

It said the duration for the job was six months from the date of the LOA, and that the project would contribute positively to its earnings.

Earlier Friday, Bernama quoted Dataprep chief executive officer, Cheam Tat Inn as saying he was optimistic the company, which posted pre-tax losses for two consecutive years, would return to the black in the financial year ending March, 31, 2011.

Cheam said his optimism was underpinned by the company’s diversification into more segments in the IT business and secured many high-margin projects.

"Dataprep expects a revenue growth of between 35% and 45% in the current financial year," he said after the AGM.

Its pre-tax loss for FY ended March 31, 2010 rose to RM5.683 million from RM5.456 million in FY2009. For FY2008, it suffered a pre-tax loss of RM3.202 million. Revenue fell by 18 per cent to RM44.595 million for FY2010 from RM54.164 million in FY2009.

Cheam said Dataprep has seen in upward trend in revenue for the past three quarters, growing by 10% to 12% and based on the performance, it would return to the pre-crisis level or even higher.

"Our recent transformation efforts had allowed us to focus on high value-added projects and we have managed to secure many projects compared to our focus on low-margin projects a few years back," he said.

Its new projects are network integration, managed services, security, TECHNOLOGY [] integration areas, he said.

He said currently, the company has an order book of over RM90 million mostly from projects received in the first six months this year.

"New projects, cost-cutting measures and increasing demand in the IT industry point to a recovery in profit," he said.

On international projects, Cheam said, the company was actively looking for merger and acquisitions abroad, along with continuous focus on the domestic market going forward.

"We have the structure in place to explore. Currently, we are in talks with several companies. However, we have not identified any potential candidates or concluded any agreements," he said.

If I'm not mistaken, this would not be the first time they reimplemented the TnG system on the buses.

Women-only bus service gets ecstatic response
2010/12/01

KUALA LUMPUR: Women can now travel with peace of mind on public transport with the introduction of the Rapid Lady Bus service during peak hours on selected routes.
RapidKL Bus chief operating officer Datuk Mohamed Hazlan Mohamed Hussain said in a statement that the special bus service was to provide more comfort and security to women and protect them from sexual harassment and jostling for space during peak hours.

"This is based on feedback received from our customers, especially females, who shared with us their discomfort during peak-hour travels."

Poovan Kaur, 63, has been taking RapidKL buses since 2004 and was elated when she heard of the service, especially for someone her age.

"I will feel safer, not because I do not trust men, but for someone my age, it's hard to fight for space during peak hours. This is a good move and I thank RapidKL for this."

Nazilah Adnan, 41, also agreed that it gets uncomfortable when travelling in a bus packed with men.

"I hope men will not think we are a pampered lot. They must admit that they are bigger and it gets uncomfortable when the buses are packed," she said.

Even though the service is only for women, boys under the age of 12 are permitted to board the bus if accompanied by a female.

A "women-only" icon will be placed on the windshield, windows, doorway and on the LED screens to differentiate the bus from the normal bus service.

The trial run is being conducted with additional buses on seven routes with high passenger volumes.

The morning services are at 6.45am and 7.30am and evening services are at 6pm and 6.45pm daily.

The morning run covers the Pinggiran Batu Caves hub, Damansara Damai hub, Sri Nilam hub, Terminal Kajang hub, Puchong Utama hub, UiTM Shah Alam hub and Subang Suria hub.

The evening routes are at the Medan Pasar hub, Jalan Hang Lekiu hub and Pasar Seni hub.

RapidKL women-only buses on trial run
Friday December 3, 2010

Women’s groups have welcomed the move by RapidKL to introduce women-only buses but stressed that more needs to be done to tackle sexual harassment at its roots.

They also commented that this should only be a temporary measure to send out the right message to the masses.

“What is worrying is that there may be separate queues, shops, cinemas and other public space for men and women in the future,” said Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) executive director Ivy Josiah.

“This may also lead one to think that separating women from men is the way to stop sexual harassment.
