RAS Conference Centre + Hotel - South Africa

The brief is for a master plan within the existing framework of the Royal Agricultural showgrounds, namely the 18 000 sq m Conference precinct on the NW portion of the site.

The new urban design framework strives to strengthen relationships between the existing showground amenities and integrate a new development node to the betterment of the entire showground.

Core planning principles of the new node new are improved vehicle and pedestrian routes, structured parking, improved cattle housing facilities, a Conference Centre and hotel.

The Hotel and Conference Centre are designed to have their own unique language that compliments the urban streetscape and the distinctive architectural style of the city. Buildings are contextually correct.

The landmark structures reflect the materials of the region and the refined detailing of contemporary international architecture.

The expression of ‘Green technology’, the buildings inner functions and the use of local materials, are the signature statements of both the built and urban surrounds.

The master plan allows for parking of 750 vehicles within structured parking, a Hotel of 10 000 sq m and Conference Centre of 14 000 sq m in the initial phase.

Project architect: Robin Herbert.
