Does this future have to exclude references to the past? Is there a time frame during which it's OK to rebuild, for example, following the devastation caused by bombing, after which, for some reason, it's seen as not OK? What determines these things? Why might it be fine to rebuild the Custom House but not the Sailors Home? Isn't chasing the 'future', similar to chasing the 'past' in so far as it implies an idealised notion of how something should be? Why can't we have it all?!
no, there is no problem with references to the past, but i really dont think its a necessity to build the aforementioned buildings, when there is really no use for them. rebuilding the overhead railway would be fine because that would be of great use to the city.
Presumably a use can be found for them? Surely that's not beyond the imagination of the people of this city? Talking abt resurrecting their architectural form not their original purpose!
One building not mentioned so far, actually started, unfinished and then redesigned.
The R.C.Cathedral by Lutyens.
What a marvelous thing it would be if this were to be built.
has anyone got any pictures of the "old" williamson square. I do think they have got this place wrong, the liverpool shop (even though im a liverpool supporter) and JJB on one side and then some rundown clothes shop and a wimpy.
I feel that to make this place more vibrant and used that there should be little cafes and restaurants around it maybe, becuase at the moment, all people do is walk through it, no-one really stops there. Am i talking a load of bull, or is this what many other people think?
what was it like before it all changed, obv i cant remember as im only 17!
yeah id like to see some of the old williamson square pics too as im 19. also if any one has any pictures of the old gyratory near to queens square as i vaguely remember it being an absolute shithole, with the bridge running from St Johns Precinct to it.
The Old Dock under the Customs House is far preferable. It is truly historic and still there – it just needs digging out. The Customs House was just another classical building. Although huge and impressive, not actually historic.
its still a part of history. a replica of the overhead railway could be built (from what has been spoken of) and that was historic too.
