You can tell the Ohio/Michigan border by the road surface. The Michigan side of I-75 is absolute shit. Meanwhile, I-75 in Toledo is smooth like ze autobahn.

DDR-BRD

Could it be called regional border? I don't know, however this place is located near border between Hessen and Thüringen and some time ago worked as one of the most important border's crossing connecting or actually separating two, very different worlds.

Is there a thread about motorways specifications?

It could be interesting... or otherways, using another already existing.

Russia is a federation if I recall correctly of 89 subjects of federation, some of them are national autonomies, some just areas. You could see that in Russian car number plates.

2 romanian guys travel around the country on motorbikes and they will eventually reach each one of the 41 Romanian counties in one project: Redescoperă România (Rediscover Romania). Here are a part of the regional border signs:

^^ Can that bridge go up?
No. It's a swing bridge. Going by the pics I've seen on Google's Streetview, the bridge appears not to have been opened in some time. I get the feeling it may be no longer in use as a swing bridge.

On the border between the Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Alberta:

HWY 3 (Crow's Nest Highway) This is the crappiest boundry sign we have.
http://maps.google.ca/?ll=49.632764,-114.691966&spn=0.001852,0.005493&z=18&layer=c&cbll=49.632648,-114.691928&panoid=4zCyVWKex-MC1kK1CtXu2w&cbp=12,130.45,,2,-0.64

The border is easy to identify without looking at the sign. BC uses no-post, while Alberta uses steel guard rails:

BC/AB Hwy 93 (Banff/Windermere Parkway)
The flags are initially the only indication you have crossed the Provincial Border.

Welcome to British Columbia sign. These are the new, standard signs that greet you upon entering the province:
http://maps.google.ca/?ll=51.222798,-116.058111&spn=0.02892,0.087891&z=14&layer=c&cbll=51.222597,-116.05836&panoid=DWy94oKa1RdvGAK9wAJfnw&cbp=12,264.49,,2,-2.79

Welcome to Alberta on the Trans Canada HWY. These are standard at all but a handful of provincial border crossings to Alberta. The non standard ones are on remote roads, mostly between Alberta and Saskatchewan. And look! They are actually being maintained too :) :
