I believe Rennes utilizes the VAL (Véhicule Automatique Léger) 208 carriages:



The vehicles ride on rubber tires and are fully automated with no onboard staff. According to the articles that I found, the Rennes system is 9.4 km in length, has 15 stations, and serves 110,000 passengers per day. Thanks to automated operation, peak headways as short as 90 seconds are possible. Other VAL systems can be found in Lille, Toulouse, Paris (Orlyval & CDGVAL), Taipei (Muzha Line), Chicago (O'Hare Airport), and Turin.

The fleet must yield rocking rides -- although I bet Rennes locals (what do you call somebody who lives there?!?) are mighty proud of their comparatively quiet trains.

One of the advantages of the VAL system is that the relatively compact dimensions of the trains allows for a relatively compact tunnel cross section:



For comparison, the following is the cross section of the tunnels being built through Beacon Hill in Seattle to accommodate the new Central Link light rail line:



The 18' 10" inside diameter of the light rail tunnel translates to 5.74 m.

I am a rubber-tyre convert -- le VAL strikes me as the best form of LRT, but something tells me that its technology still has many kinks needing to be ironed out.

Rennes Metro is based on the Siemens Transportation Systems VAL (véhicule automatique léger or light automatic vehicle) technology. There is one line, the 9.4-km A' Line with 15 stations, which runs north-west to south-east from J.F. Kennedy to La Poterie via Gare de Rennes (served by Gares metro station), with fifteen stations, thirteen of which are underground. The station at La Poterie and viaducts on the line were designed by Norman Foster. Stations are equipped with platform screen doors.

€100m for Rennes metro Line B

FRANCE: On November 13 state-owned investment bank Caisse des Dépôts signed an agreement with the greater Rennes authority to lend €100m towards the construction of metro Line B. The European Investment Bank is already lending €300m towards the project.

According to Caisse des Dépôts, Line B is one of the largest public works projects currently underway in France, involving total investment of €1⋅2bn and due to open around 2019. Running for 13⋅8 km and serving 15 stations, it is expected to be used by 110 000 passengers a day

Les travaux de certaines stations sont bien avancés. Le tunnelier a atteint la station Sainte-Anne le 20 septembre. Les prochaines stations seront les stations Jules Ferry, Gros Chêne, Les Gayeulles et Joliot-Curie. Les trois dernières stations (Beaulieu-Université, Atalante et Cesson-Sevigné) seront en surface.

Le temps que le tunnelier creuse jusqu'à la station Joliot-Curie, les ouvriers auront le temps d'avancer sur l'aménagement des autres stations où le tunnelier est déjà passé. Pour ces stations, normalement, les travaux de second œuvre ont déjà commencé. Pour d'autres, ça commencera en 2017. D'après le planning prévisionnel, Siemens commencera à équiper certaines stations dès fin 2017 ou début 2018. Certaines stations pourraient être équipées bien avant, mais ils ne vont pas commencer avant que le tunnelier ait fini son parcours.

Like many other countries, France has financial problems.

But like many other cities, Rennes is quite rich. Lots of big cities in France are very dynamics : Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes.

Rennes is one of the most liveable city in France. Every year, 10 000 new inhabitants come in its metropolitan area. It's 20 000 for Bordeaux !
