Report: Most City Bridges Need Repairs
APRIL 03RD, 2005
Many of the city's bridges are reportedly in need of an extreme makeover.
The New York Post's review of federal highway data shows that 77 percent of the city's bridges are considered either "structurally deficient" or "functionally obsolete."
The paper says major river crossings like the Brooklyn, Triborough and Throggs Neck are among the 182 bridges not equipped to handle today's traffic load.
Other bridges, such as the Willis Avenue and 145th Street bridges, are reportedly decaying so badly that the Federal Highway Administration is recommending they be completely rebuilt.
Last week, state lawmakers committed to paying out $5 billion for the highway and bridge projects in the city over the next five years.
