Groundworks started today on a new 15 story tall office/retail tower in Reykjavik (Kopavogur). Expected to be completed in 2009. Its located right next to Iceland's tallest office tower also u/c, with about 10 out of 20 storeys completed.
It's very rare that you here about anything with Iceland on this page (or in media in general, for that sake). Most news are only about the insane rent-levels.
Great news to here that things happends on Iceland, and that there are/will be scrapers there like in the rest of S&B! Do you have details on other projects going on in Reykjavik/Iceland?
There's actually a lot going on here. Three office towers under construction (15, 19 & 20 storeys tall) a 19 storey residential building and a number of medium residential high-rises. A bit scattered though.
Another rendering:
The taller tower will be right in the left corner of the above picture. A rendering:
The construction of the tower has been on hold for 2 or 3 years due to the financial meltdown in oct. 2008. The tower has like 6 floors and the first 2 or 3 floors have gotten the facade on.
I think the project is owned by some banks and it is unclear if it will be finished.
One of the bank doesn't want anything to do with it and others say they might finish it later and maybe have fewer floors.
It goes by the name: Norðurturninn (The North Tower)
I was driving there few days ago and the facade is done up to 4 floors and the 7th floor is like 50% built, but that's since few years ago.
That's what it looks like today. I don't know who is paying for cranes. There is no use for cranes now in Iceland so I guess the construction company owns it and just keeps it there.
There was supposed to be a third tower in the area, south of the Smáralind mall (here). I don't know how far those plans went. That lot is in a prime location but I don't see any plans for it on the town's website
It's been almost four years since construction was halted. The construction company went bankrupt and there is no solution in sight for what will happen to this tower. I would be surprised if the structure has not been damaged from the neglect during this time.
Nothing as big as this tower (not that I remember anyway). If you go out into the newest suburbs you'll find a lot of single-family houses at various levels of construction that have been untouched since the crash. These are very strange neighborhoods with streets laid out with streetlights and such but with only a few houses that people live in, a lot of empty lots and a bunch of unfinished houses that are going nowhere.
One such neighborhood can be seen from above here.
