Africans like big things too much. Of course Abuja didnt get a subway. You know how much they cost? If any city in Nigeria should get one it should be Lagos first. In fact, I think Lagos must be one of the few mega-cities on earth with no subway. Actually, can anyone think of any other mega-city with no subway?

LIGHT RAIL FOR ABUJA

On 7 May, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo officially inaugurated work on a new 1,435mm gauge light rail system in the capital, Abuja. Comprising three phases that are expected to be complete in 15 years, construction is being financed with a $US841 million dollar loan facility provided by the Chinese government. The 280km system is planned to cover the whole Federal Capital Territory including Wuse, Garki, AYA and its satellite towns of Karu, Nyanya, Kubwa and Gwagwalada. The project has been contracted to CPCS-Transcom International of Canada with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) as joint development partner.
The first phase will comprise 60km of route linking Area 10 in Garki, the central area, Wuse neighborhood centre, Utako Motor park, Jabi, Life Camp, Karmo, Gwarinpa and Kubwa. Also included are the national stadium, the Kukwaba national park, Idu and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Lagos has a pop. of 12 - 17 million and 2000+ density!!My bad, Lagos doesnt have megacity status under both criteria (ie 10million+ population or density 2000/km2).
Other African cities that should consider a subway- Jo'burg and Luanda. I dont think any of the other large cities are in countries currently in a financial state to build a subway. Accra is large enough but Ghana does not have the finances and the city has a low pop density because it is so spread out. Angola has other priorities now but they should keep a subway in mind when developing the city. I reckon by 2030 there will be a subway in Lagos, Abuja, Nairobi and Luanda.

No, that is one aspect of it. it has a semi-underground portion that goes from Sandton to OR Tambo International - The east-west corridor. And it's not a 'shuttle', its a high speed (160km/h) train.
