Bicaz gorges - Hășmaș National Park

P.N.C.B - H (65 km²) is of a great geologic, geomorphologic and paleontologic interest. It is also interesting from the point of view of its landscapes, and biological diversity generated by the great variety of geoclimactic conditions. The Bicaz Gorges are famous in Romania also because of their impressive dimension. At the same time, the Red Lake, formed through the natural blocking of the Bicaz river's waters (1837) offers a lovely scenery to the eyes.

ATRACTIONS:

-Belvedere points, special scenery, impressive gorges formed by the Bicaz brook and its affluents

-The Red Lake resort: a well - known climacteric resort

-Suhardul Mic ( observation point ) - one can observe the Red Lake region

-The Ghilcoș massif ( observation point ) - one can observe the Red Lake region. The Ceahlau massif can be observed as well.

-The Bicaz Gorges on DN 12 C, with a length of about 5 kms., the most impressive gorges in Romania.

- The Șugău Gorges

- The Bicăjel Gorges

- The Hășmașul Mare peak - ( 1792 m altitude)

- Piatra Singuratică ( The Lonely Stone ) - Hășmașul Mare.

Small Pond of Brăila Natural Park

Ramsar

Is a wetland of international importance (Ramsar site). It is the last vestige remained under natural conditions of floods on the Lower Danube, after draining the former Inland Deltas (Brăila Pond and Ialomița Pond), which preserves in the present complex aquatic and terrestrial ecosistemes in a state close to the initial one.

The protected area is 245 km². Is Romania's second largest wetland, after Danube Delta.

The park covers the waters of Danube's main branch (Cremenea or Dunărea Nouă, between the cities Hârșova and Brăila) and seven islands on this branch, among which Small Island of Brăila is the biggest.

Each of the seven islands is a distinct geo-morphological entity with meadow as a microrelief distributed on a altitude amplitude of 6 m from the top of hill to the bottom of the lake. This variation in altitude determine a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats characteristic for each island.

Ceahlău National Park

Ceahlău Massif is the most impressive of the Eastern Carpathians, one of the few places in Europe with unadulterated nature and old-growth forests.

It displays an incredible concentration of flora - over 2,000 flower species, and wildlife.

Over 90 species of birds can be seen in the Ceahlau National Park. The capercaillie (Tetrao urogalus), the biggest among the birds in the park, can be seen here.

The park is also home to the black goat, the lynx, the wolf, the fox, the brown bear and the pine marten.

The elk (Cervus elaphus var. carpathicus) - monument of nature and the most valuable species of Ceahlau - can be admired.

Borțig Pothole, Apuseni Nature Park

Is a spectacular pothole, with a 35 m diameter entrance. At the basis of the vertical entrance (of -38 m deep), there is a large block of permanent ice, 16 m deep.

The pothole has a total length of 150 m and a depth of 54 m obtained due to a short gallery which gives access to a large hall. The pothole is situated above the subterranean route of the Fortress of Ponor underground river, but the access is blocked by the ice. The ice block is estimated to have about 30 000 m3 in volume, being the second largest in the country, after the Scărişoara ice cave, also situated in the Apuseni Nature Park.

In the video you can see the glacier on its bottom.

Stânișoara Mountains

They cover a pretty large surface, 2100 km². Maxim height 1,530 m. Are situated between the Moldavian Plateau (the hilly eastern region of Romania, Republic of Moldavia and parts of today Ukraine) and the mountain ranges Bistrița, Ceahlău and Tarcău.

Much of them is part of Vânători - Neamț Natural Park.

In past many hermits where living here and even today there are such people, as well as tens of monasteries, including Romania's largest : Văratec (400 nuns), Agapia (3-400 nuns), Sihăstria (100 monks, largest male monastery in Romania), Neamț, Secu etc, making Neamț County to be called "Romanian Athos".

Bihor Mountains

Apuseni Mountains (map) or Western Carpathians are a group of mountains covering ~22,000 km². There are several ranges, among which Bihor Mountains have the tallest peak in Apuseni: 1849 m.

Much of Bihor Mountains is part of Apuseni Nature Park. This is one of most extraordinary karst regions in the world, with thousands of caves (including ice caves, see post #11), prehistoric jungle and other natural attractions.
