What is the safest neighborhood in Chicago? Is there a website where I can see the all the crimes committed in each neighborhood. I'm sure its in a neighborhood like Portage Park, where absolutely nothing happens.

Find out where the cops live. Every big city usually has one "cop neighborhood," and it's a sure bet that is the safest.

You can search it by zip code, address, intersecting streets, or schools.

We have several, and they are safe, but not the safest IMHO. We cannot afford the safety that money can buy-not on our salaries. We tend to cluster in the safe 'hoods that are quietest and relatively affordable.
Mount Greenwood versus Clearing

I agree with CPD. Large numbers of policemen live in Mount Greenwood because of its affordability. Yet despite their presence, Mount Greenwood has a significant number of burglaries and car break-ins by persons who live in poorer areas to the east.

I saw an article saying that Clearing, which is just west of Midway Airport, was the only neighborhood in the city that did not have a single reported sexual assualt last year. Clearing has a lot of police. Its crime rate is lower than Mount Greenwood, perhaps, becase as opposed to Mount Greenwood, Clearing is farther away from very poor areas.

One quirk about the Chicago Public Schools is demonstrated in Clearing. The people whom I know who live in Clearing would not send their kids to Kennedy High School, the local school. That is because CPS sends a lot of kids to Kennedy who are lower-income kids from far away.

Thus, you might have seen the TV news stories last week about four of these lower-income kids viciously beating an unfortunate Kennedy honor student, a student who actually lived right there in Clearing. He can't go to the high school in his neighborhood without being beaten.

Thanks for clarifying that. What you say makes sense.

I wonder though if the "safest" neigborhood should only consider crime rates......the single most dangerous activity most of us engage in is driving.....so perhaps the focus should also include the notion of mortality rates.....ie car accidents......many of the so-called safer neighborhood are very auto-centric.....resulting in residenst driving more often thereby exposing themselves to a relativley high risk of serious injury or even death.....other neighborhoods that are more PT centric may have higher crime rates but lower mortality.....just a though
Edison Park and Norwood Park, more cops and firemen there than anywhere else.

I agree. Many people in Clearing do not send their kids to the local Public schools, but only partially because of the violence and quality. Most cops in Clearing tend to be White and Latino and overwhelmingly Catholic. Add to that the fact that St. Laurence/Queen of Peace, Brother Rice/Mother McCauley, Marist and St. Rita high schools are so close by to both Clearing and Mt. Greenwood and you see why so few of these people send their kids to public schools.

It's no secret that white people within the Chicago city limits treat the schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago as their own personal "Public" school system. Chicago Public Schools is largely the minority school system of Chicago.
west rogers park is prob considered one of the safest neighborhoods
Indians,Packies, and Jews live there and there all pretty harmless groups of people.
Sauganash and Edgebrook get the nod from me. They are the "upscale neighborhoods" for single family homes in Chicago.
