Future's orange for Croydon's tallest building

Aug 30 2007

By Ian Austen

CROYDON could soon become home to one of Britain's tallest buildings - complete with its own orangery.

Plans to regenerate the northern end of the town centre were officially submitted to Croydon Council this week - and they include a massive 422.5-foot tall skyscraper.

At the moment there are only 10 skyscrapers in the country which are taller than the proposed 44-storey tower.

At 130 metres tall, it would be just five metres smaller than the London Eye and soar above Croydon's current tallest building, the 82-metre NLA Tower.

The Berkeley Homes (South East) development is planned for the site of the former Randolph and Pembroke House office blocks, in Wellesley Road.

It has been on the drawing board for some time, but this is the first time councillors have been able to assess the development in detail - and see just how tall its centrepiece skyscraper would be.

The development, to be known as Wellesley Square, would comprise 321 two-bedroom, 316 one-bedroom, 26 three-bedroom and 76 studio flats.

On the ground floor there would be a mixture of restaurants, cafes and shops designed to attract people into the area both during the day and at night.

There would also be a play area for children, roof gardens and an orangery - a greenhouse used to grow the fruit.

Berkeley Homes says it is determined to bring the key site back to life and sees the development as a catalyst for the regeneration of Croydon by providing a new place where people "will want to live, work and play".

Charles Graham, of architects Rolfe Judd, said: "Croydon needs a gateway from the north as you enter the town.

"We see this building very much as a landmark. You need to be bold in order to create something special to flag up the fact that the area is changing."

Mr Graham said Croydon could be a very grey place and that his company wanted to change that, literally, by using bright colours - mainly blues and purples - on the exterior.

If planning permission is granted by the council, it is hoped the building will be completed early in 2010.

PP isn't finished so it isn't counted, However Beetham Tower Manchester is, and it's taller. So is Beetham Birmingham, to spires anyway.

It's okay - I'm sure it will work effectively as the focus point of the drab existing cluster. Nasty cladding though.

Wellesley Square (includes 44 storey tower) in Croydon is due to start in Spring 2008- Not sure if its worth starting a construction thread yet- The site has been cleared for years so if/when it does start it shouldn't be long before it starts to rise. No idea if this will all be built at once or if it is to be phased.
