Kirov Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in St. Petersburg, Russia, and was one of the largest stadiums anywhere in the world. The stadium was named after Sergey Kirov.
Its seating capacity was 84 000 and it reached 100 000 with some standing sectors. The stadium existed between 1950 and 2006, it was a home ground of Zenit St.Petersburg.
The new Zenit and WC-2018 stadium (69 500) is located on Kirov stadium's spot.

^ Russia had a spring-autumn season, historically. ;)
Well it was big and the lights where nice (big also)
I can't imagine people really being sad to see this one go or am I wrong?

Well even now, the winter break is quite long. Still can't imagine a lot of please March or November/early December days there.
^ Aye, I never really understood the switch to autumn-spring. It's not like they were competing so well in European competitions that such details were going to give them the edge. They should have kept the more fan-friendly good-weather calendar IMO.

I guess they think it's easier to coordinate everything with the rest of the European calendar. No large success in Europe as of yet, so we'll see what they think about the switch in a couple of years.

Still though, they have this major problem of trying to get through the first direct elimination rounds in February and March when they are short of match practice. No matter how they change the calendar, that's always going to be a challenge.

It reminds me of Michigan stadium. A bowl style built for the most part underground.

It is just much better when teams play they last and most important games of the season in late April-May (with great weather, full stands, fine pitch, etc) than in November, like they used to :)

you're not wrong, but if construction of the new arena wasn't so f*cked up, everyone would be even much more happier
