since in this forum, there are thread about Tawau and Kota Kinabalu, so......as a Sandakanite, i would post this...

Sandakan is the second-largest town in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern of island of Borneo. It is located on the east coast of the island and had a population of 347,334 as of the 2000 census. It is the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah, such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands Park, Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves. It is also infamous for being the site from where the Sandakan Death Marches commenced in 1945.

Future developments

1)Dataran Sandakan

An active dataran (square) located in Sandakan, Taman Utama. A central, metal sculpture featuring Malaysia's identity (our national flag) is placed at the center of the square. The centre (focal point) is elevated slightly from the road level to give prominence to the centerpiece sculpture. The square is divided into 4 separate quadrants to allow different activities to happen simultaneously. A separate area facing the sculpture is also designed as part of the dataran to allow for flag raising ceremonies.

May have rugby field, football field, basketball court and badminton/tenis court

2)Giant Hypermarket

120,000 square feet, the first Giant Hypermarket in East Malaysia, scheduled to be open in Q3 2006

3) Garden Villa

4) Bandar Utama

The client for this commercial Center envisaged a major up market entertainment centre in Sandakan.

In the design, we planned for a generous outdoor eating area to be covered with a tensile fabric roof. The dual frontage 3 storey shop office is envisaged to draw many food specialities and fast food outlets to cater for the growing middle class population in sandakan.

well.........there are several problems here.....

1)frequent blackout
2) illegals (sabah's infamous problem)

oh well........they better sort this out before 2008 since our PBT has targeted 2008 as the year for Sandakan to be upgraded into city

Very orderly and presumably well-planned city. Many of the buildings need a fresh coat of paint or upgrades though. It has potential to be a very good-looking city.

This is the Sandakan logo, not the municipal council logo

It was introduced back in 2004 to celebrate the declaration of Sandakan as 'The Nature City'

Looks like a small quiet peaceful town to me
Nissan Fuga,

Your pix have made me miss Sandakan.

It's such a nice medium size coastal town.
Where everybody seems to know everyone.
Cheap 'Ikan Bakar' at Buli Sim-Sim market..who could not miss that.

I'll post my own collections of Sandakan pix too soon!

* Did you know that Sandakan perhaps has got the most entertainment centres per square KM in M'sia? Check out Batu 4..
