Villar eyes Starmall expansion
By Christina Mendez (The Philippine Star) | Updated April 15, 2014 - 12:00am

ILOILO , Philippines – The Villar Group plans to expand its Starmalls from five to 22 in the next few years, former senator Manuel Villar Jr. told The STAR yesterday.

Villar said he is focusing on handling the family business with the end of his term as senator.

“As we continue to expand Camella Homes all over the country, we are also building more Starmalls nationwide,” said Villar, who went to Iloilo last weekend to lead the Light of Peace that aimed to get the Guinness World Record for having lighted the most number of candles for world peace.

As a matter of procedure, Starmalls Inc – being a publicly listed company – has notified the Philippine Stocks Exchange (PSE) about the plans.

Starmall continues to expand its mall chain, with four more new shopping centers slated for opening in the next few months.

These branches are those in Taguig City, Imus and Molino in Cavite and Sta. Rosa in Laguna.

ALL HOME SOON IN STARMALL SANTA ROSA

Villar investing P4.5B for 15 AllHomes
by James Loyola
June 29, 2014

The Villar family’s retail arm All Value Holdings Corporation is aiming to open 12 to 15 branches of its AllHome furnishings and hardware depot nationwide from 2014 to 2016 at a cost of about P3.6 billion to P4.5 billion.

In an interview during the opening of AllHome Taguig, All Value chairman Manuel B. Villar said they have already identified 30 sites nationwide for AllHome branches near projects of flagship Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc.

“We can build on these sites anytime. It’s just a matter of pacing,” Villar said adding that they can open as many as 100 branches nationwide to serve the needs of Vista Land’s home buyers and contractors.

For the rest of this year, Villar said they will open AllHome branches in Sta. Rosa in Laguna, Imus in Cavite, and in Daanghari for a total of four new branches in 2014.

Villar Group goes into high-end malls

MANILA, Philippines - Starmalls Inc., the listed commercial property development firm of the Villar family, is tapping the upscale and mass markets for its two new shopping mall brands.

In a briefing, Starmalls chairman Manuel B. Villar Jr. said the company has come up with shopping concepts Starmall Prima and Starmall Strip.

“Starmalls is determined to up the ante and raise the level of the mall experience for the Filipino by building higher quality malls with a more dynamic tenant mix, wider retail and service offerings, and interiors and exteriors inspired by the world’s more trend-setting commercial hubs,” he said.

Starmall Prima will offer a fresh take on mall design and function. It will also include an upgraded level of tenant mix.

The first Starmall Prima, a 55,000-square meter project, will be put up in Taguig.

Villar said Starmall Prima branches will also be put up in Sta. Rosa in Laguna and Molino in Cavite in the next two years.

Starmalls’ anchor branch along EDSA in Mandaluyong will eventually be converted to Starmall Prima, he said.

Starmalls is also introducing its community mall concept called Starmall Strip, similar to DoubleDragon Properties Corp.’s CityMall branches.

Villar said Starmall has identified close to 100 possible sites for Starmall Strips, which will be supported by communities developed by Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc., another Villar-led company.

Under the ongoing expansion program, Starmalls targets to open 22 shopping centers by 2017. The listed firm is opening Starmalls Daang Hari, Taguig and Sta. Rosa this year while 12 to 15 more shopping malls will be opened next year.

The company currently operates Starmall Alabang, Starmall EDSA-Shaw, Starmall Las Piñas and Starmall Annex. Starmalls offers a one-stop family shop that caters to shopping, dining and recreation needs.

Thai mall developer Land & House, which owns an 11-percent stake in Starmalls, regularly sends officers to the Philippines to help in operations. Land & House owns the biggest home depot in Thailand.

In the first quarter this year, Starmalls earned 5.16 percent more at P128.94 million from P122.61 million a year ago as revenues climbed 25 percent to P453.88 million.

Villar firm expands mall network

Villar-led Starmalls Inc. is venturing into the high-end retail segment via its Prima brand, with three malls set to open in the next two years.
The shopping mall development and leasing unit of the Villar Group of Companies is completing the construction of the first Starmall Prima in Taguig City, which will cover a gross floor area (GFA) of 55,000 square meters, Starmalls chair Manuel B. Villar told reporters.

The recently opened AllHome outlet in the city was the initial phase of the Prima Taguig development, which by August will also have a branch each of the following food chains: Burgoo, Gilligan’s Restaurant, Pancake House, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Wing Stop and Yellow Cab.
The second phase of Starmall Prima Taguig will be completed next year, Villar said.

Two other Prima malls will rise in North Molino, Bacoor City in Cavite and in Santa Rosa City, Laguna.
The Prima mall in Laguna will also open next year, while the one in Cavite is targeted for opening in the first quarter of 2016, Villar said.

While most of the existing shopping centers being operated by Starmalls are “regular” or catering mainly to the mid-market, Villar said the emergence of more affluent Filipinos amid a growing economy augured well for malls showcasing high-end tenants.

“We will put up Prima malls in areas surrounded by upscale residents. The competition in these areas is tighter, so we need to level up our offerings,” Villar said.
The flagship Starmall located at the corner of Edsa and Shaw Boulevard will be renovated and may be converted into a Prima, Villar said.

Starmalls opens first high-end mall in Taguig

Amid its continuing aggressive expansion, Starmalls Inc., the mall and office leasing unit of the Villar Group of Companies, has started to roll out high-end malls with the first one to open in Taguig.

Starmalls is a chain of malls listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange.
In a formal launch held recently, Starmalls introduced its “Prima brand,” which will be an upscale mall development, compared with its community malls under the “Strips brand.”

Former senator and businessman Manny Villar told reporters that the demand for upscale malls is quite strong and since they want to cater to every market, they came up with the decision to build a high-end mall.

He explained that Starmall Prima malls are designed like the grand malls in the US and Europe with a selection of key big box or anchor stores in strategic areas of the mall.
When completed, Starmall Prima in Taguig will be the first Prima in the country and will have a gross floor area of about 55,000 square meters. Starmall has just completed phase one of Prima and is laying the groundwork for phase two.

Starmall is also targeting to complete phase one of two other malls under the Prima brand located in Santa Rosa, Laguna and Molino, Cavite, within this year.

The mall developer is also mulling over a plan to build a Prima mall on its 2.3-hectare property in EDSA, which is seen to compete with other mall developments in the area.
“Eventually, we will build a mall there. It will be a prime development. It has to be the flagship development of the company,” Villar said.
Among the stores included in Prima malls is All Home center, the home building, furnishing and improvement store brand of the Villar Group of companies.
Launched in August of 2013, All Home is a one-stop shop for all the home needs of a homeowner, builder or contractor.

Last year, Starmalls signed a P2.7-billion loan agreement payable in seven years with Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC).
Starmalls started its five-year expansion scheme in 2012 when it announced it will allocate P15-billion worth of investment in the next five years to build malls nationwide, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao.
