Saudi Arabia discovers two gas-rich oil fields

RIYADH (Thomson Financial) - Two new gas-rich oil fields have been found in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, close to the massive Al-Ghawar field, Oil Minister Ali al-Nuaimi has announced.

The Mabruk 1 field, which lies 30 kilometres southeast of Al-Ghawar, will produce 5,600 barrels of heavy crude and 2 mln cubic feet of gas per day, Nuaimi said in a statement carried by the official SPA agency.

The Durwazah 1 field, located 70 kilometres southeast of Al-Ghawar, will produce 5,569 barrels of light crude and 2.8 mln cubic feet of gas per day.

The Al-Ghawar field - the world's largest - has a production capacity of 6 mln bpd.

Saudi Arabia sits on 261 bln barrels of oil reserves, a quarter of the global total.
