Dubai: The UAE has officially requested that the GCC mediate to help solve the problem of trucks backing up at the UAE border with Saudi Arabia.

"On Wednesday we received an official request from the UAE Federal Customs Authority, asking the Secretariat to intervene to solve the problem of the long queues of trucks at the UAE border waiting for clearance before crossing into Saudi Arabia," Mohammad Al Haif, Director of the Customs Union at the GCC Secretariat, told Gulf News.

The 24km line of trucks waiting at Al Ghuwaifat border crossing has cost UAE trucking companies up to Dh120 million per month, according to Gulf News calculations. The line is reportedly 8,000 vehicles long.

Drivers used to earn Dh5,000 per trip, and used to make the trip five times a month, but they are now only able to make it twice a month, losing over half their earnings.

"We contacted Saudi Customs and they said they have no new instructions. However, they asked for an official inquiry, and we sent them an official letter," Al Haif said.

A Saudi spokesman told Gulf News a committee would be meeting soon to resolve the issue. He said this was a customs problem and not a passport issue.

Al Haif said he expected the issue would be discussed at a previously scheduled meeting between the Director General of the UAE Federal Customs Authority and his Saudi counterpart, to be held in Riyadh in the "middle of next week".

The truck issue comes amid reports of tension between the UAE and Saudi Arabia over the choice of Saudi Arabia as the site of the future Gulf Central Bank, instead of the UAE.

The UAE has not joined Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in their agreement on the common GCC currency.

Mohammad Al Mazroui, GCC Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, told Gulf News: "I don't believe there is any connection between the border issue and the UAE position with regard to the bank location."

"The build-up of trucks happens every now and then," he said. "There must be reasons for this and once we discover them, we will be able to solve the problem."

Al Haif dismissed speculation that the truck issue has a political background. Referring to the dispute, he said: "We did not see tension during the official meeting that took place last week of the joint committee that is responsible for the Customs Union."

Bully at work :) though we all know what happens to a bully in the end ;)
The reason is the new "chilish" UAE national ID card which has a UAE map with territories that belong to Saudi LEGALLY. I call that a hostile act!!
You ask for trouble, you get trouble. Now deal with it :)
The ID card was issued 2 years ago, did they wakeup last week?

This remind me of the custom law which was adjusted so that the money goes to the country that receive the products, hence Saudi Arabia, so it get most of the revenues even though it is the UAE that handles the procedures. So it doesn't matter if u have the biggest or the best transportation and infrastructure because Saudi Arabia will take most of the cake at the end. Ironically we swallowed it before !
I am not surprised if they announce the Abu Dhabi-Qatar causeway within days or weeks!
I wonder how the UAE would act if Saudi publishes a new map that includes Al-Ain...
^^ I guess normally since it already published maps with Khor Al Udaid in them, as well as Khafji, and Najran. 3ady no big deal.

Whattttt? Is there such a project proposed?
That would be HUGE!!
^^ There was, until Saudi Arabia decided to butt it !

I've always thought there were land border between Qatar and UAE

All maps show this border connection? When did KSA claim that land?

since before the U.A.E's union!!
look at the maps from 1956 and you'll see the proper boundary line..

^^ HOW could the map be from before 1956, and the border with Qatar says "revised in 1992"

LOOOOOOOOOL!

That map is after Saudi took Khor Al-Udaid and Salwa
There are no need for any old maps, the borders are legally marked according to an agreement recognized by the UN. But the kid who came after Shiekh Zaid thinks that he can simply abolish all previous agreements by publishing false maps!!

When King Abdullah ignored his request to renogotiate the PREVIOUSLY signed he agreements, he thought that he can get away with building a causeway that goes through Saudis maritime borders. But Saudi stood against him again. What a childish loser :)

Emaar to develop mega Saudi project
Reuters

Riyadh: Saudi-based Kingdom Holding Co said on Saturday it has appointed Emaar Properties as lead developer of a large property project that will feature the world's tallest tower.

Emaar will be in charge of developing and supervising the construction of Jeddah Kingdom City land and Kingdom Tower, said an e-mailed statement from Kingdom Holding, which is 95 per cent owned by billionaire Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal.

"Emaar was selected... for their previous proven experience in the development of mega projects, their knowledge of the area and social setup," it said.

The project, with a total investment of at least 100 billion riyals (Dh100 billion), will be located in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah, Kingdom Holding added.
Don't get me wrong there; I love alot of things about the UAE including the progressive business environment they built. I also like the Emarati companies like Emaar and Ettisalat and I think they have helped transforming the telecom and real estate sectors in the kingdom to the better. I also loved Sheikh Zaid in many ways. I just think that his son is a total disaster in his approach with Saudi. He's like a little skinny cat who thinks that he's a lion. Someone need to tell him that keeping good relations with Saudi is of the best strategic interests to the political and economic future of the UAE!!!!
And come on there.... "help my country"??? Why not say that we are helping Emaar by giving it a big project while most of its Dubai projects are being put on hold. They are investing in Saudi because it's lucrative not because they like to help us ;) and I'm totally okay with that :)
No i did not get you wrong , i know you saudis LOVE the UAE :) your all over the place ;) and i love the fact that you are , were all brothers and should always feel free to visit each others cities

i kind of dont feel the same now after ive met you

what on earth are you on about by the way , what has shiekh khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan ever done to your country ? list them , backed with facts and sources , not just spam.
