Schlitterbahn to announce opening date

GALVESTON — Progress at the Schlitterbahn water park has been steady enough that officials are almost ready to announce an opening date.

Jeff Henry, a designer and owner of the park, last week said that the grand opening of the facility would be announced May 24.

Schlitterbahn officials will also unveil a 40-by-40-foot scale model of the facility, which is on airport property near Moody Gardens.

Henry thus far has been hesitant to set an opening date for the park because delays were always a possibility. In January, he said it would be open by January 2006 at the latest.

“We’re pouring concrete, building rivers and building pools,” Henry said. “It’s coming along very, very well.”

The rivers Henry was referring to are three artificial river systems that will be part of the “float-in, float-out” park. In other words, visitors will be able to see the park without getting out of the water.

“This is the biggest river system that has ever been built,” Henry said, adding that one section of artificial river at the park will be 60 feet wide.

Plans for the park also call for a wave pool, a sand pit and an area where patrons can put on a diving helmet and walk underwater amid live rays and fish.
