Seattle, mostly Belltown

Here are some photos I took wandering around Seattle's Belltown neighborhood and a couple of other places one day. Belltown has a lot of great historic buildings, which until the recession hit, were being rapidly replaced by new hipster condo blocks. The place has a ton of potential, and is one of the big restaurant/bar/club areas of Seattle. But it could use some more people so that some of those neglected historic buildings get reused.

This is Facebook's new Seattle headquarters, and its first office outside of Silicon Valley.

KIRO Television (CBS) Note the earthquake cross-braces added to the building later.

The Qwest building's brick facade is carved with scenes from Seattle's history.

Not taken from Belltown, but I took these the same day, so they're part of the same batch.

The McGuire building was only a few years old when the city condemned it earlier this year. The city says it's unsafe and could fall over at any second. The owners have their own experts who say it's not true. Either way, the people who lived there had just a couple of days notice from the city to GTFO. Now it's covered in scaffolding to protect people in case it starts coming apart the way the city predicts.

I love the "bones" of that neighborhood (I walked through it when I visited back in 2006), though I seem to recall reading that there isn't a good grocery store for residents to walk to? And also it gets kinda dicey at night, particularly after the bars close?
Really good, very nice photos from Seattle :eek:kay:

I don't think groceries are that big a problem. Unlike most urban neighborhoods, there appears to be plenty of surface and garage parking in Belltown, so a lot of people who live there have not yet been weaned off of their cars.

There's a Ralph's supermarket at one end of Belltown (not related to the Ralph's chain owned by Kroger), and another smaller supermarket over on the other end. Plus there are at least three grocery delivery services that serve the area: Safeway, Amazon Fresh, and Spud.

As for whether it's safe or not, that depends on what you're comfortable with.

To me, it's fine. In the six months I've lived here there has only been one or two shootings in a fairly large neighborhood. IMO, it's far safer than Chicago or Cincinnati, or most other cities I've lived in. But you get a lot of 20-somethings who move out here from the farms of Idaho and Oregon and are spooked very easily by things they're not used to. City mice won't think anything of it. Country mice... should really go back to the country.
