"Rakúsko má záujem o ďalší rozvoj a posilnenie dopravného spojenia Viedne a Bratislavy.

"Máme záujem na vybudovaní druhého diaľničného spojenia na sever od Dunaja," uviedol konferencii vicekancelár a minister dopravy, inovácií a technológie Rakúskej republiky, Hubert Gorbach. Dodal, že momentálne prebiehajú patričné výskumy a prieskumy realizovateľnosti projektov, ktoré uskutočňuje rakúska strana s podporou Slovenska.

"Rakúska strana prichádza s iniciatívou, aby sme hľadali aj severné spojenie Viedne a Bratislavy," potvrdil minister dopravy, pôšt a telekomunikácií SR, Pavol Prokopovič.

Just a short summary in English:
Austria (Vice chancellor and Minister of transport Hubert Gorbach) initialises the northern expressway connection between Bratislava and Vienna. Now the research and feasibility studies are proceeding to realise this expressway connection.
Southern highway (south from Danube) is already in construction and should be finished next year.
The northern expressway should be finished by 2010.

Yes, the northern connection should be around 30 km long (just a guess) on the Austrian side and on the Slovak side it will be connected to D2 highway to Brno and the Czech republic (up to 10 km). The western districts and suburbs of bratislava will thus have a shorter connection to Vienna (about 10 - 15 km shorter, than through the southern highway and about 8 km shorter, than the present connection.

That's not long at all.. I'm wondering why wasn't this done earlier..
Well, earlier this was not so easy realisable - the contacts before 1989 were limited, you know, what I am talking about. Even if this is not long, it´s a second highway, or better said expressway connection between Bratislava and Vienna, I am wondering, which cities in Europe got two connecting highways, if any.

Well, Slovenia (back then still communist Yugoslavia) dug a 8-km motorway tunnel in the late 80s in cooperation with Austria.. It's still in use today, the longest road tunnel in Slovenia (well, partially)..

Still, 1989 was 16 years ago.. I'm pretty sure it could've been done in the last 16 years, but as they say, better late than never..

Fine you have a good motorway connection to Austria, still it´s not the case of Bratislava, it´s a first class road anyway, but it is crazy jammed all the time, that´s why new infrastructure is built, designed and upgraded (not only the highways). Bratislava and Vienna are very close and so are becoming the ties between Slovak and Austrian capitals.

So it will be even shorter for the Touaregs to reach Vienna.
