please post your favourite harryS bldgs or projects you hate.
the controversial Architect died 9th march 2006/ age 82

http://www.seidler.net.au/
one thing ive always admired about harry is that he likes his projects BIG.
He is very innovative and likes to use shutters and have large foyers.
He has at least one of his buildings in each city in australia.
I admired him when i was younger because all of his buildings seem to be a new tallest!

Seidler was born in Vienna in 1923 but fled to England in 1938. He was interned in a camp in Canada during the war and on his release stayed in the there to study, finishing his work at Harvard. In 1948 he came to Sydney.

harry loved his models

ill start with his swang song. the 14storey office tower for French Alliance in Clarence st, sydney currently uc.

i love his pool in Ultimo

The Worst.

Shell House, Spring Street, Melbourne.

Mundaine design, in a fantastic location. Completely disrespectful to its site (sheer walls built on fronts that can never be built out due to laneway's and nearby historic buildings). An important corner of Hoddle's Grid deserve's better.

In terms of design, I feel the same way about Grosvenor, QV1 and Riparian, and any building of this awful style.

The Best.

Capita Centre, Castlereagh St, Sydney.

Fantastic design, designed in the early 1980's, completely ahead of it's time.
Australia Square and MLC are also great Australian buildings.

I like most of Seidlers original building, the ones that aren't copies of another. But after a while all he did was copy and paste buildings together from others he had made.

By the end he only had 2 different buildings.

Granite office buildings with 3 window frames per window, sunshades, a curve and some holes cut out.

Residential buildings with 3 sides, wavey balconies and windows in sideways L shape.

Riparian was the only recent new design, but it was just the 2 old designs one on top of the other.

This photo best shows the problem.

Australia Square is the least offensive. The rest is rehash on rehash etc etc.
I do like The Rose Seidler House however, quite groovy except perhaps for the ramp. Interestingly, just saw some townhouses in Indooroopilly which have taken a leaf from this book, and works nicely.

And then some!

I have to say as a rule I don't like his work. Usually variations on the same theme to me. And there are the reprehensible buildings such as Riparian, Blues Point (though I begrudge the moron that got that building heritage listed, than Seidler himself), and Meriton Tower.

That said, I do like MLC because it's just so imposing, and have to acknowledge that Australia Square is an absolute classic.

Working in Australia Square last year gave me a real appreciation for Harry. I hated my job, but liked working in the building so much I didn't want to quit. Walking into the lobby every morning almost made up for the despair I felt when I sat down at my desk a minute later!

Comrade Tiger

I think some of my favourite Seidler projects are the ones he designed for himself.

Harry and Penelope Seidler House, Killara
This has got to be one of the best houses in Australia, and quite different from Siedler's norm. I couldn't find any decent pictures of the interior (there were a whole bunch in an issue of MONUMENT last year), but it looks like a great place to live.

More here: http://www.twentieth.org.au/seidler_killara.html

Harry Seidler Offices and Apartment, Milsons Point
It doesn't look much from the harbour side, but from the street this place is fantastic. It's the sort of building that you just have to stop and look at.

The interior is just as good.

Apartment:

Berman House, Joadja
He didn't design this one for himself, but man, it's awesome.

I don't think Shell House is all that bad, either. It's got a great shape, it's different to everything else in Melbourne, and, like all Seidler buildings, has great details. Look at this:

Nice!

with the exception of Blues Point Tower, Seidler was a great architect.

Despite the garbage that some people carry on with, Riparian is a sensational building.

However for me, MLC and Australia Square are his best.

The only good angle on Ripraian & Riverside Centre is the one with eyes tightly shut. The absolute indignity lies within the fact that 20 years passed but Seidler couldn't come up with a different design. They are both a blight on the landscape.

Just imagine going into the car dealership in 1984 and then in 2004 and finding the same car there - NEW - CURRENT MODEL - would you like that in black sir?

I was going to say Capita was the best - because it's the one which least looks like the rest.

Shell House has now had its second name change in as many years - Shell -> SAI -> now Orchard.
