I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet in this section, this looks to be one of the most fascinating projects in all of Africa. Western critics hated this entire project due to its "fake" aura but I like it a lot. As of now the city only has 1,000 residents. Its basically a new capital city for those who don't know, built from scratch. Its going to be Afar region's own Abuja!

A bit of old Semera

And back to the new stuff

Thanks for this thread, I thought we already had one.

Semera is indeed interesting. The University that's being built there will house around 6000 students, the soon to be ultimate party town?

We can introduce Birra to the Afar, then it'll be a party town.

I think Ethiopia's future looks bright if these kinds of projects are introduced to the disaffected regions, next stop is a casino in Jijiga.

The Afar already have chat, how intoxicated do you want them. I hope I hope Ethiopia can get over the hump and start to develop.

Why is the whole Afar zone completely neglected? The only regions that seem to get any attention are Amhara, Tigray, and Oromo zones. And you wonder why Ethiopia has the largest number of "Liberation Fronts" on the continent.

What's your point Ahadu? This is the first project of its kind in the Afar region, that doesn't take away the decades of neglect. Good on the regime for reaching out but it hardly makes up for region's void of government activity.

Thanks for the thread Janub, it was overdue.

Imagine the first time I heard about Semera was in 2007, I was going from Djibouti to Addis and we went through this town. I was amazed to see a new city built fro scratch, people there explained me it was to be Afar State new capital. Much better than Assayita!

Good to have such a nice city at our gates...Hope the city develops. Do you guys have an idea if the new Djibouti-Addis railway will go through this city? (It's gonna go through Afar State). That could help to put this city on the map.

Yes, the rail will pass through it.

http://www.diretube.com/ethiopian-n...of-its-biggest-rail-way-video_102e8062b.html#

If you look in that video, you'll see the rail that runs East-West through Afar region will go through Semera. Basically, the line that will go to Tadjoura.
Merci pour le lien. Great news for both Semera and Tadjourah, basically this line will run through Afar lands:). These cities will develop with the railway business, just like did Dire Dawa and Ali Sabieh before them. Really glad about it.

Please double check for me if Tadjourah will be the end of that line on the Djiboutian side. The map on the video stops at the border, but I guess its gonna go all the way to Tadjourah.

Abesha, do you have any idea on what will happen to the old Djibouti-Addis line? Any projects, renovation work under consideration?

That line obviously got the highest priority, construction has already started (I think I've read reports about it).

Excellent news! I think construction started on the Ethiopian side only, coz otherwise I would have hard the news.

I think they're pretty serious about the railway thing in Djib, the parliament just approved last week I think the creation of a state owned national railway company that will operate alongside the Djibouti-Ethiopia Railway Company.

Its excellent if we have 3 ports serving Ethiopia (the current Djibouti and Doraleh ports) and the coming Tadjourah port that will also be linked by rail to Ethiopia. More dollars from the Ethios :naughty::naughty::naughty:

Yep, and when the 6000 students come in, it'll basically be a college town, so party central as Yoniii said LOL.
