Shanghai Cityscape 上海都市风景

I just put in an order for a book called "Touring Shanghai". I saw it as an advertisement for the magazine "The Hong Kong China Tourism Press". Anyways, I was wondering if any of you guys have it and could tell me if its a good book, has a lot of modern pictures of Shanghai, etc.

It's not Manhatten of anytime, it's Pudong! Pudong does not have to hide behind any other cities name.

Yeah i agree, Pudong is Pudong :lol: its very unique and impressive, i don't think there is any skyline like this one in the world. To make comparisions, Pudong looks nothing like Manhatten. One can say that Pudong is just as good, if not better than Manhatten, but certainly not LIKE manhatten.

Pudong has a lot of culture integrated into the modern skyline, something very hard to achieve. I like the skyline because of its colour and diverse styles. Everything in Pudong is very unexpecting. Same with the Hong Kong skyline, its very exceptional.

Sigh. Please people, don't be too overly sensitive its a simple compliment. Just like when some people say for example. "omg that new singer is the Celine Dion of the 21st century!" We all know shes not Celine Dion but to say she is like one is a great compliment, an achievement, a recognition a praise.

I find it very annoying that everything in the world must be compared to something in America - sure things in the US are relatively well known, but its just so annoying like its the gold standard of the world. There are other ways to describe things...

I'm in Shanghai stay in my brother's. It's really a beautiful city. They have a lot of amazing buildings here. And I was really shocked when I arrived at Pu Dong international airport. Very impressive.

I have heard the Great Wall of China used in a similar positive fashion. Maybe it would help if people could expect the best from others rather than just reacting as if they had a chip on their shoulder. If you are looking for others to offend you, then you will eventually find insult. Some of the posters on SSC should consider a compliment exactly as its written.

There are many posters, such as myself, that live in the United States. To compare something in China to something that is in the US was not meant to insult or reduce the value of things that are Chinese--its the reverse. Most Americans have never been to China so a comparison to something they can relate to is logical.

The original poster meant to compliment China. Frankly, its sort of embarassing sometimes to see posters in China overreacting because its a sign of immaturity. I see myself a a someone who appreciates chinese culture and all things chinese--I am chinese-american after all.

I do not think the poster had "need" in mind when they complimented. If I may suggest that the intention of the poster was simply to express the positive feelings that they had. Furthermore, I would hope that SSC posters would respect their fellow posters more so that compliments are never "cheap".

Couldn't agree with you more, uwhuskies. It seems almost as some folks just wànt to be offended, just so they can start their little rants again. But hey, at least they've scared off people who wanted to give more compliments. Good job, guys!

I would still like to compliment Shanghai though. It's the Paris of China, the Rome of the 21st century, the Rio de Janeiro of the Northern Hemisphere, the Manhattan of the East, the XzGhlrgk21XzZZQx of planet Earth. In other words: It's epic.

I can understand both sides, yet neither side seem to want to understand each other.

Bottom line is, if you want to compliment someone, don't do it in a way that they may find insulting. It kind of defeat the whole purpose.

BTW, it's easy to point fingers, while you're accusing some Chinese posters of being "immature" and not "respecting" other posters, you are doing the exact same by repeatedly "compliment" in a way that some Chinese members here find insulting.
