I just read about this, today a short-list of 8 possible sites for Britain's first Las Vegas-style "super-casino" has been announced. and Sheffield is one of the sites listed, others include Wembley Stadium and the Millennium Dome in London, Cardiff, Blackpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Glad it has been. Is it only the one at Bramall Lane, or have more been shortlisted too?
I think its the general principle of the casino. I dont think any specific proposal is being looked into at this stage, remember there is a proposal for meadowhall as well, which is much larger.
"Regional planning bodies are being invited to submit their views on the proposed sites by 28 June, as are members of the public."

Surely this means that they have a specific site in mind?
In that case, it'll either be the Meadowhall one, or the one at Don Valley - I dont think the Bramall Lane proposal is as large and i'm not even sure if the Don Valley one is still actually proposed.
Is that this thingy?

Btw, how do you do that thing where rather than have to post the whole link you can make it so you only have to click on one word?
"The local authorities which applied for super-casino licences but were rejected were Leeds" (BBC NEWS WEBSITE)

Thats made my day reading that!!
hmm..... wouldn't be too sure of that - I read somewhere that Leeds made it through onto the shortlist of candidates for the (several) smaller regional casinos. I think leeds might have more chance of getting one of those than sheffield has of getting THE (only one) supercasino given the competition. leeds are up against middleboro and south tyneside so they've virtually got it lol.

I hope leeds do get it. They are the tacky capital of yorkshire so why not keep hold of the crown.
While I am happy to see the status of Sheffield being shortlisted for such a scheme, I hope it doesn't get built here, as I know too many people who will be sucked into it and loose money which they couldn't afford.
I think it'll be between Wembley and Blackpool, they are the favourites, anyway for all you fools who like to throw your money away there's a new one being built underneath the fancy car park in the Heart of the City development and there's always Dave Allens places at Owlerton and Ecclesall Rd.

That will happen wherever you put one though - we cant let the misfortunes of some silly people taint the rest of the scheme.

Absolutely...there will be many wider, less obvious benefits to be gained from these schemes such as employment and regeneration, particularly the Don Valley proposal. Should we noty open more pubs and bars because some people happen to be alcoholics? Keeping my fingers crossed for my former employers Bond Bryan and their proposal at Don Valley for Sun International. Its the best scheme for Sheffield by a mile I feel in terms of design and the benefits it can offer the city.

So is Sheffield only on the Supercasino shortlist then, and that's it? Is it really either supercasino or nothing? It'd be great to see Bramall Lane get a large/small local casino.

Also, what's this about the one built uder the carpark as part of HotC?

The anti-Leeds attitudes are getting tiresome.
The general opinion seems to be that although the local councils want the investment money, the people don't really want this on their doorstep. Part of it is the gambling problems it'll bring, and partly the 'Meadowhall' effect to the local smaller casinos and leisure facilities. You may find yourselves praying that it doesn't come to Sheffield (our prayers have been answered already).

As for tacky capital comment, eh ?

Sheffield Casino proposals overview

There are three proposals on the table for a supercasino in Sheffield. These speculative applications have already been submitted to the Council on the basis of the city obtaining permission to build on (although that doesn't mean a scaled down version may be proposed in case approval is not given)
Here is an overview and link to the threads of these three ‘super casino’ proposed for the city.

Sun International at Don Valley Stadium

MGM grand at Meadowhall

Las Vegas Sands at Sheffield United stadium

St. Paul's Casino
The new St. Paul’s car park development will include a casino.
More info can be found in the below thread. This casino will go ahead, regardless governmental decision on the 'super casinos'. The difference, as far as I understand between a 'normal' and 'super casino' is purely and only the maximum amount of money that one can bet.
