ShenZhen(05.08.2008)- Olympic Torch Relay

Shenzhen is a city of sub-provincial administrative status in southern China's Guangdong province, situated immediately north of Hong Kong. Owing to China's economic liberalization from the policies of reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, the area became China's first - and ultimately most successful - Special Economic Zone.
Shenzhen's novel and modern cityscape is the result of the vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the late 1970s, when it was a small fishing village. Since then, foreign nationals have invested more than US$30 billion for building factories and forming joint ventures. It is now reputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
Being southern China's major financial centre, Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous high-tech companies. Shenzhen is also the second busiest port in mainland China, ranking only after Shanghai.

That one should be taken from the "Village inside the city"
This one represents the actual skyline
Is that Macau across the water?
I think I saw the huge bridge entering Macau.

^^ i believe it's the bridge to HongKong, there's still some distance from Shenzhen to Macau if I'm not mistaken.
It is not Macau, it is Shekou, part of Shenzhen.
What aweful did I say :dunno:

explenation:

1. terrible city planning - Shennan Road (main street) is completely fenced off, it is impossible to cross it on the grade level, only undergound or overground. New part in Futian is another example - I was there yesterday evening, very nice but completely empty, is it normal for CBD of huge metropolis? It is build for cars, each part of the CBD is separated by huge roads etc.

2. pictures here show only one side of Shenzhen. Sure judging by photos of nice architecture it must be very nice place to live, but when you get there you will find out for example that most of the people live in settlements called urban villages, it is almost not possible to find any pictures of urban villages in this thread.

3. lack of history - for me it is drawback as I like the city to be diversified - that is why I mentioned Guangzhou, IMO the best city in China.

4. in general the city starts to be boring after very short time, to give Shenzhen justice there are nice mountains and beautyful costline in Yantian so you can always escape from the boredom of the city to the nature.
From my point of view to answer your first question.
You said that is a CBD area, So, that is why this area is so empty in the evening. The reason why it's impossible to across the Shennan Main Road because the whole CBD project has not been completed. it's suppose to be have a "bridge" connected the North and South of the ShenNan Main Road.
In 5 Years time, I think the CBD regions is going to be really busy..
Don't forget, Futian CBD is just beginning..
Other question you have mentioned is also going to solve out as long as the city keep developing.
