I don't know when or if this is happening but found these cool renders on the Grimshaw website:

If this ain't happening it should be, the current 80's design could do with a replacement.

Wouldn't be an overly large casino would it? The Sheraton Mirage has never struck me as being a particularly large complex.

If Tony Fung manages to get these proposals up, maybe he'll end up being the next big player in Australia's Casino industry?

^^ If only this all happened a couple years ago and we could have had him bidding for Queenswharf as well ;)

Marina Mirage and Sheraton Mirage together though would be quite large, as by the sounds of it, he is wanting both.

It is understood the Marina Mirage site would be re-developed into a new waterfront convention centre, dining, shopping and entertainment destination - with upgraded superyacht berthing facilities.
Although disconnected somewhat by Seaworld Drive, the potential is still huge. Especially if they get approval for a decent size building/tower.

Didn't somebody else have a resort planned around here?

^^ Ahh, I missed the part about it including Marina Mirage as well. Including both definitely makes it more viable. That said, should we be expecting a new, large development? I would more foresee a refurbishment and upgrade of the existing Sheraton site, with a more substantial but still lowset refurb of the Marina Mirage site. I don't think an overly large development would go down particularly well with the vocal NIMBYs of the GC, and would likely face at least some of the same obstacles as Wavebreak did.

As for other resorts in the area, didn't Sunland pickup the Fisherman's Wharf site?

Tony doesn't seem to do things on the small side so I'm leaning to a larger upgrade if he does get these properties, I don't expect anything tall though.

I find it really interesting that the media is claiming Fung is having ongoing negotiations with the Queensland Government over a casino licence. Considering the Cruise Ship Terminal plan was only axed about two weeks ago, I'm starting to think the state's preference is the Sheraton Mirage site. They were never keen on the Wavebreak Island plan yet are having ongoing discussions with Fung over a casino licence...

^^ I think you have your projects mixed up. Mr Fung never had anything to do with the Wave Break island proposal, he is currently in talks regarding the Aquis Proposal in Cairns and the acquisition of the current Casino there.

Have I? The article specifically says several times that he is looking to redevelop the Sheraton Mirage (in Main Beach) into a casino resort. It then says insiders suggest his purchase of the Sheraton Mirage hinges on a casino licence being granted and he is in ongoing talks with the Queensland Government over a casino licence.

It also says insiders believe Jupiters think a second casino on the Gold Coast would only be necessary if it could attract high rollers. I was simply saying that it appeared the state government was in talks with both the Wave Break Island group and Fung. Then I said perhaps the state's preference was Fung's proposal that is apparently in ongoing discussion while they've shut down any chance of the Wave Break proposal going ahead.

What have I missed?

^^ Sorry, that makes sense now. Certainly is interesting, if he managed to get a casino licence here that would mean he has Canberra, Gold coast and potentially Cairns. I wonder if his name is going to pop up anywhere else around the country?

You know, surprisingly it's not even the usual bitchfest when something new is proposed on the GC Bulletin site about this. Let's hope Tony delivers something spectacular, certainly the Cairns stuff is pretty swish.

Bring it.

Didn't Sunland buy a parcel of land around here and are working on something special too?

Could it be JV? or is it a different site altogether? I'm sure a JV of that nature is highly unlikely.

Yep, Mariner's Cove, it's been in the works for a while, all a bit hush hush, but I think it's going to be good:

The company has laid plans for a new high rise tower at Labrador and is still working on plans for the redevelopment of Mariner’s Cove at Main Beach.

Abedian says Mariner’s Cove is “a significant project that warrants careful analysis”.

Con Makris (Adelaide Billionaire) only recently bought Marina Mirage (as well as as all of Oracle's commercial). Doubt he would ever sell to Fung but a JV is possible. I think a buy out or JV with Sunlands Mariners Wharf site would make more sense as a new waterfront Casino development with possibly a new high rise hotel tower.
