At least three people were shot, reportedlty at a cafe. One man died as paramedics treated him.

Police have blocked all access to the Rialto building.

A Victoria Police spokesman said at least three shots had been fired in the Williams St and Flinder Lane area just before 8.30am.

"Police are in attendance at the scene and are looking for an armed offender in that area," he said

One person is being treated at the scene by paramedics and is believed to have gone into cardiac arrest after being shot.

Two others have been taken to hospital and are believed to be in critical conditions.

This is so random? The 'mob' maybe? Seems a bit premeditatedand in the open otherwise.

There is now 1 dead and two in a serious condition.

Wow. I was in the city early this morning too, but not over that side fortunately.

Edit: Just went outside to go to another building and there's choppers flying about everywhere. I counted at least four!

Yeah its pretty bad huh? Whats even worse is that even with all this gun crime Melbourne still has the lowest violent crime rate of all the capitals....

Melbourne just seems to get the more famous ones, whereas in the other places they seem to be moredomestic violence and more private.

This happened on the corner at the rear my building. I work on the 3rd floor and can see directly towards Williams/Flinders Lane corner. Body is still there, and the whole area is blocked off.

So is this what happened?

A man and a woman are in a taxi, they start arguing, the bloke gets out and pulls the woman out by her hair.

Two backpackers run over to intervene.

The bloke pulls out a gun, shoots the woman and the two backpackers and walks off.

One backpacker is now dead, the other backpacker and the woman are in hospital but still alive.

It was actually two lawyers that went to the aid of the woman

This could happen in any of the major cities or infact anywhere around Australia, a worker was shot dead in the Adelaide City Myer Department Store over 2 years ago.

according to the Age - the woman who was involved in the incident (not the bystander) - just moved from Sydney recently...

i felt so upset re the killing - especially when innocent people who tried to help became the victim
what a lost of a human soul... he was a lawyer...? what a pity...

i hope that gunman is captured soon
