Chadstone in $500 million expansion bid
Miki Perkins
December 6, 2011 - 11:14AM

Some might consider it a pleasant excursion — others a kind of a torturous purgatory.

But shoppers may soon have the opportunity to sleep at the country’s largest shopping centre, with Chadstone planning a massive expansion that includes a hotel.

Stonnington Council has agreed to ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to consider a $500 million expansion of the Chadstone Shopping Centre.

The $500 million development would include a hotel, multi-storey offices as well as an expansion in food and entertainment retailers.

The planning permit would also remove the curfew which closes the Chadstone Road entrance between 12am and 6am.

Chadstone is already the biggest shopping centre in Australia with approximately 530 stores and claims it is the largest in the southern hemisphere.

‘‘Council has not yet determined a position on this proposal and will be actively seeking the views of all stakeholders through the community consultation process,’’ a spokeswoman said.

I seriously do not know why people are whinging about the possibility of Chaddy expanding again. Too big?? Take them to West Edmonton Mall! See what they say then! If you're not happy with living in the big smoke with big shopping centres, move to the country!
I don't know why they persevere with Chadstone when Oakleigh and Carnegie shopping streets are so close ? It will never really take off without a rail line......

Because Chadstone's specialty is not either Korean Restaurants or Greek Takeaway.

It will never really take off without a rail line......
It's already taken off, it did 40 years ago.

The next-biggest mall in Melbourne (Westfield Southland) is right next to a train line but it's not near any of the stations, lols.

good on em for having ambition.
So Stonnington and not the Minister will have final say on this one?

Damn! :bash:

 Have you been to Chadstone? "persevere" lol.

Like all the other shopping centres in Melbourne that have struggled without a rail service.... Highpoint, Northland, Southland......

Ringwood station being next to Eastland, has really benefited it, bringing in the calibre of midday crowds necessary.

Oh yes, bringing in the upper classes from Boronia and Mooroolbark, with their prams that have Woodstock cans sitting on the top.
I love how some of you guys actually think I am serious...even some of the time? heeeee

That kind of humour is difficult to bring across in just text, it requires facial/bodily expressions to "get".

On the topic of railway service it does stump me why a proposal to link up East Malvern and Oakleigh hasn't been established. I daresay if the outer circle railway was still in place the shopping centre would have edged closer to it, however that was closed decades before the shopping centre came into existence.

If you want more piccies of Melbourne shopping centres try popping on over to Westfield's website. Chadstone's and Centro's sites are well worth a look too.

Yeah, I find anything said on a computer is often taken literally but I was half kidding. I can ( just ) remember when Chaddy was a paddock. When news came that Myer and other shops were going to be built there people thought it was out on a limb from Oakleigh Shopping Centre and even Myer coming to the suburbs was ambitious as it was a City department store ! .......and no rail station at it's door so it would struggle. Then history shows...........it worked out.
