It will be interesting to see how much support has dropped since then.

The costs however for kuala lumpar, manchester and melbourne were about the same as the montreal olympics.

1.5 billion in 1976 was an incredible figure with a worldwide audience. The commonwealth games were not shown in singapore one of the richer per capita or GDP nations of the commonwealth. India's TV rights package was signed in the 10 th hour with India having 55 percent of the population of the commonwealth paying a little over 200,000 american for manchester and probably less then the junket the committee made to melbourne. The Indains refrued to pay the$ 600.000 the austrlaian asked for. It is rumoured that Australia actually had to pay the CBC to broadcast the games as it was less then four weeks before the opening ceromonies that the canadian deal was signed. The cbc was hard pressed for funds in their sports budget alotted to the winter olympics, curling and the NHL which with the strike last year took the lionshare of any revenues the CBC makes in a year. TSN,Rogers Sportnet,
CTV sports were all not interested even though it is reported that the deal fro vancouver 2010 for rogers is on the order of 150 million us dollars.

Melbourne according to the study comissioned by games organisers and done by the international econimcs consulting group KMPG stated that spending on the games was 3 billion au dollars for 1.5 billion in benefits.

If investing 3 billion to get 1.5 billion is a good idea then the reasons are clear why taxpayers have to be stuck with the bill and private banks would only tocuh this in a small sponsorship role in the order of 10 million to 20 million for australia. The commonwealth games people in melbourne were asked about the statement of 2 to 1 the benefits to cost by a jounralist for the australian newspaper "the Age " . Why not spend 5 billion to get 10 billion. seems the study showed the ratio stated by ron walker was the opposite.

Well let put it this way.The 90 percent figure was the bristol communications poll comissioned by the committee in december. Then in late january the last poll was the work of corporate communications comissioned by the halifax herald just as the opposition was starting to take hold in the media with some coverage. With all the letters to the editor, open line talk shows, bruce devenne and op ed pieces ranging in the 75 percent range agiasnt the games I would say it is about 50/50 and going down.
The campagn of "Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts" is well on the way to succeeding. Jones
