The historic center of Sibiu, surrounded today partly by the old exterior wall of defense, is a set of medieval to Art Deco architecture with an area of almost 80 hectares with a total of 1,050 buildings.
The historic center is divided into the Upper Town (Orașul de Sus), traditionally the area prefered by the upper classes, bourgeois, and the Lower Town (Orașul de Jos), traditionally the manufacturing area and inhabited mostly by the lower classes.
Sibiu old fortified city is one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe, both in scope and as built volume and richness of forms. During the 16th - 18th centuries was often compared with Vienna. There are similarities on the architectural plan, accentuated by incorporation of Transylvania in the Habsburg Empire.
The city was founded on the site of an older settlement, probably Slavonic (present day Piața Aurarilor area), after the middle of the 12th century by Saxon colonists from the Rhine-Moselle territory. The first mention of the city is made in 1191 under the name Cibinium (only Upper Town) in an ecclesiastical document from the Vatican. But there are mentions of the name Villa Cibiniensi (1292 - Lower Town) and Villa Hermani in 1223, sub-city border belonging to Cibinium.
In 1241 was attacked and partly destroyed by the Mongol hordes. First attested form of Hermannstadt dates from 1366, the same year is considered by most historians to have been declared ''city'', though more recent archive researches indicate the year 1326.
In the 14th century, it was already an important trade center. In 1376 the craftsmen were divided in 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German language name of Siebenbürgen, and it was home to the Universitas Saxorum, the Assembly of Germans in Transylvania.
Starting with mid 18th century, the city became an important center for the romanian community north of the Carpathyans.
The city was Capital of Transylvania between 1692-1791 and 1849-1865.

Papiu Ilarian Street will be completely upgraded. The costs are almost 700,000 lei

One of the projects on the agenda of the Local Council meeting this month concerns the modernization of Papiu Ilarian Street. The street is short, but it is important because of its location in the historic center.
The project includes the rearranging of the roadway and sidewalks by stone plating. Also, will be installed the pipeline for the metro wiring, create a more efficient drainage system and modernize public lighting.
As a result of this investment estimated at 670,000 lei, Papiu Ilarian Street will integrate in the rest of the streets in the historical center of Sibiu.
Work will be done next year.

Frumos, multumim !

Il cunosc, e un personaj controversat...& no more comments about that.

Have fun with these two cases

Daca e asa ma bucura, inca o data multumesc :) Si am incredere in el, dupa chestia cu Oravita din iarna, trust has been restored !

Piata Mica 22, the fresco remnants discovered during the 2016-17 renovations. Most probably the fresco dates from the 17th century. The building preserves in a vaulted room on the ground floor other well preserved frescoes dated 1631.
More details here http://patrimoniu.sibiu.ro/cladiri_en/piata_mica/107

Is it just me, or that hand looks like holding a large banana

City Hall restores the Wall of the Citadel and the three defense towers

The Wall on the Corneliu Coposu Boulevard, as well as the three defense towers, will be restored by the Sibiu City Hall. Now the municipality's representatives are looking for the right firms to handle the works.
These must be certified by the National Union of Historic Monument Restorers and certified by the Ministry of Culture.
The restorers will undo and replace the degraded masonry. The restoration will be done with medieval mortar.
The façade will be restored in compliance with the materials required by the rules and legislation in force concerning the restoration of historical monuments.
The existing wall will be treated with anti-salt solutions and will be cleaned by brushing.
The degradations in the stone masonry will also be restored, just like the tile coverings.
In the area of the city wall on Coposu Boulevard, the shrubs will be cut three meters from the wall and the vegetation grown here will be removed.
