RESIDENTS of Siewdor Mansion in Jalan Tebing, Brickfields have been given a further one-month extension to move out. They were originally told to leave by March 31.

A former owner of the 50-year-old apartment, who wanted to be known only as Wan, said he had agreed to allow tenants to stay until the end of this month.

“We have sold the property and signed the Sale and Purchase Agreement and must ensure vacant possession by May,’’ Wan said.

“If they (tenants) plan to stay, legal action will be taken against them,’’ he added.

Wan said he had been very kind to tenants, some of whom had lived there since the 1970s.

“Many owe us a lot of money, but we let it go,’’ said Wan.

StarMetro reported that the iconic Siewdor Mansion, one of Brickfields’ oldest buildings, had been sold and tenants were given notices to vacate the premises by March 31.

Many were taken by surprise and said they needed more time to find alternative accommodation. They have asked for a one-year extension.

“My house in Taman Desa has been rented out and I cannot tell my tenant to leave because we have signed a tenancy agreement,’’ said a tenant who did not wish to be identified.

Beautician Ragini Ganapathy, who has been living in Siewdor Mansion for many years, said she was a widow and had three young daughters.

“My girls are studying in SJK(T) Vivekananda nearby.

“I need more time to look for an inexpensive place to stay,’’ Ragini said.

Brickfields residents are worried that a new high-rise building will come up in the area, worsening the overcrowding and congestion problems there.

However, a spokesman from the purchasers’ law firm said no major development would take place and that any plans for the property would only enhance the surrounding area.

“Siewdor Mansion is rundown and old, the owners are in their twilight years and are no longer capable of managing the place, hence their decision to sell.

“All we can say at this time is that the redevelopment will bring vibrancy to the neighbourhood,’’ he said.

On residents’ request for an extension, the spokesman said that ample notice had been given and the landlords had been very kind to tenants who have been paying low rental rates all these years.

A recent visit showed that many tenants have not moved out.

Built in 1963, Siewdor Mansion was one of the first apartments in Brickfields to have a lift.
