The Edge Financial Daily: SM Prime Holdings appoints Aurecon as designer of SM Megamall Towers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Philippines’ largest shopping mall and retail operator SM Prime Holdings has appointed Aurecon to provide structural engineering design services for its SM Megamall Towers in Manila.

According to a recent statement, global engineering consultant Aurecon will work closely with Arquitectonica, the architect of the high-rise office building, from the concept engineering phase to the design development.

“Our involvement in this exciting project is to provide ingenious engineering solutions that achieve the critical balance between a dependable structure and one that expresses the architect’s aesthetic vision,” said John Webb, Asia’s built environment market director of Aurecon.

The 50-storey SM Megamall Towers development will come up in the centre of Ortigas in Mandaluyong City, a major commercial business district within Metro Manila.

SM Megamall Towers’ 124,200 sq m floor area includes three levels of underground parking, plus above-ground parking.

Aurecon will provide its structural engineering expertise to four initial phases of the project — concept design, schematic design, design development and construction documentation review.

The high-rise office building will also feature a direct link to SM Megamall, one of the biggest shopping malls in Southeast Asia.

“The tower is S-shaped in elevation,” said Webb. “So one of the biggest challenges is developing a structure that can be constructed effectively with edges that move in or out at every level without compromising the ability to withstand seismic activity.”

Wait, there's more!

According to the site, the renovated cinemas will become (mali ang pagkaarrange)

Cinema 2: Megascreen (large-format)
Cinema 3A: Premium Cinema (Typical new cinema)
Cinema 3B: XD 4D Cinema (subject to change, wala na kasi XD Cinema sa MoA eh)
Cinemas 4A and 4B: Director's Club
Cinema 5: Private Cinema (a la-Greenbelt's My Cinema, or can be converted to Director's Club if vacant)
Cinema 8: Children's Cinema
Cinemas 9A and 9B: Premium Cinema
Cinema 10A: E-Sports Cinema (Obviously, e-sports!)
Cinema 10B: Cinema Cafe / Dine-in Cinema
Cinema 11: Premium Cinema

So there will be 4 premium cinemas, 3 Director's Club Cinemas (including the Private Cinemas), 1 Megascreen (might not be replacing IMAX) and 4 specialized cinemas.

But wait because there's still even more!

They split four of the rearmost and biggest cinemas (3, 4, 9, and 10) into two but still end up with twelve cinemas?!?

Well, they actually ditched the currently existing cinemas 1, 6, 7, and 12 in favor of MORE retail space for Mega A's 3rd Floor.

Possibly even for the 4th and 5th floors too if the structure would be able to handle the addition of floors within the vacated cinema structure.
More stores for Megamall.

Take note how much retail space can be added to Mega A after cinemas 1, 6, 7, and 12 have been converted into leasable space.

Is this not the current biggest mall in the Phils? Most of the articles says North Edsa why?
The basis is the retail gross floor area (GFA) of North EDSA for the most part. Megamall still has the biggest land area, it's just that North EDSA was able to maximize every square foot of their property to open new stores instead of leaving those open areas idle.

Anyway, Megamall and North EDSA has always been neck-on-neck on being the biggest SM supermall out there as their GFAs are moving target, so the data depends the time you are asking.

Not a fan of this, the other one below I think is much better.
Also, notice the huge gap between panes that this design produces.

I like this one better. It allows for bigger panes and smaller, almost-nonexistent gaps between panes.
It also helps cover that horrible white-painted frame from the early 90s

The glass is from CGT Glass Trading, a local supplier. Good luck sa kanila. I heard medyo matagal daw magbayad SM. :D
