Corporation to set up micro composting centres across city

Corporation to set up micro composting centres across city

To cut the cost of transporting and processing organic waste at Vellalore plant
In a bid to decentralise the processing of waste, the Coimbatore Corporation will set up micro composting centres across the city. Sources familiar with the developments say that the Corporation has planned to set up 60 such centres, for which the process of estimate preparation is under way.

It will be similar to the Vellalore waste processing plant but the two big differences will be that the micro centres will process only organic waste and the quantity they can handle will be five or less than five tonnes a day.

The Corporation has not decided on the locations of the centres, as it depends on the quantity of organic waste the wards generate. In wards where the quantity of organic waste generated is less, the Corporation will combine the ward with the neighbouring wards to set up a common composting centre.

It has planned to have the composting centres in three different capacities – ability to process one, two and five tonnes.

The waste generated and collected from the wards reaches the micro composting centres, where it is cleaned – removed of inorganic waste – shred and then dumped in cement tanks and left to compost. During the period the waste decomposes – usually 30 to 40 days – the Corporation will add effective micro-organism solution to hasten the process.

The sources say that the cost of a micro composting centre that can handle a tonne of waste is estimated at ₹10 to ₹15 lakh and a five-tonne centre around ₹35 lakh. But this is not the final estimate as field-level engineers are in the process of preparing the estimates and selecting the locations.

In short, the objective is to process the organic waste at the ward-level as it has two advantages – the Corporation can cut the cost of transporting and processing the organic waste at Vellalore plant and increase the quantity of organic and inorganic waste processed.

The sources say that 40 % of the waste generated is organic waste – roughly 400 tonnes a day. If the Corporation is able to process this waste at the ward-level, the quantity of waste taken to Vellalore will come down. And, the waste taken to Vellalore will be more of inorganic, recyclable waste.

The Corporation officials managing primary waste collection say the success of the micro composting centres depends on the efficiency of the door-to-door segregated collection of waste, something which the Corporation needs to pay attention to.

For it to strengthen the door-to-door segregated waste collection, the Corporation will have to invest in manpower – more conservancy workers – push cards, collection bins and small vehicles. Unless this is addressed, the Corporation will not be able to see success in the micro composting centres.

The Corporation officials say the civic body has placed orders for over 1,000 push carts, bins and 30 vehicles.

‘Use biomining method to dispose waste’

‘Use biomining method to dispose waste’^^^^

Coimbatore: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the city corporation to scientifically dispose 15.50 lakh cubic metre of accumulated solid waste at the Vellalore dump yard within four months, using biomining technique.
The order was passed while disposing a petition lodged by MDMK youth wing state secretary V Eshwaran.

Civic body had been disposing the accumulated solid waste using capping method. Terming it an old technique, NGT directed the civic body to follow the biomining method.

The city corporation, meanwhile, informed NGT that it had achieved about 80% of source segregation. “We will achieve 100% before the deadline that falls in 2019.”
