There is no need of a shaven head nor of tangled tress if (a man) shuns those deeds which the wise have condemned.

Long hair or shaven head probably followed by groups of people of yonder belonging to different religious faiths as a sign of renunciation and leading a simple life. These practices are seen even in the modern times.

Valluvar does not believe in such acts and sees them as a mere intent to show off to the outside world. He thinks it is better if one leads a cleaner life by shunning bad habits and be pure inside.

The other kurals from the same chapter further explore this dichotomy.

For example,

வலியில் நிலைமையான் வல்லுருவம் பெற்றம்
புலியின்தோல் போர்த்துமேய்ந் தற்று. (kural 273)

Someone who is weak in mind (internal) but of strong build (external) is like a cow that grazes grass covered with a tiger's skin.

vali - strength
nilamaiyan - fickle

valluruvam - strong body
puli - tiger
thoal - skin
poarthu - covered with
maendhu - graze
atru - is like

தவமறைந்து அல்லவை செய்தல் புதல்மறைந்து
வேட்டுவன் புள்சிமிழ்த் தற்று. (kural 274)

thavamaraindhu allavai seydhal pudhalmaraindhu
vaettuvan puLsimizh thatru.

Under the guise of an ascetic, if someone does evil things, it is like a hunter who spreads a net hiding in a bush.

If there is a word in Tamil that sounds similar to a Sanskrit word, it is immediately considered to be derived/lifted from the latter.

There is no denying that there is a bias against Tamil as it is considered to be the language of humans and Sanskrit is the language of gods. The reasoning, apparently, gods could not have borrowed from humans.

If you suspend your belief in divinity for a second, how come a language that has been spoken/written continuously for at least 3000 years has to constantly borrow from another that has not been spoken for at least 3000 years?

The truth has to lie somewhere in between. The borrowings could be mutual.

For example, the word 'neer' meaning water is said to be borrowed from Sanskrit.

In Tamil, there are many words using 'neer' such as thanneer (cold water), kanneer (tears), padhaneer (water from the palm tree), neerodai (stream), and so on which indicates it is a common Tamil word. However, due to bias, the word is considered to be of Sanskrit origin.
