This place is interesting in that the expansion of 1997 was actually two projects: rebuilding and refurbishing the original stadium, and building a new building to hold the ~22,000 seat addition. The original structure needed major repairs, and they had to remove the press box and replace it with seating. And at the same time, they were building basically a large ring around the stadium, which would support the extra 22,000 seats, the new press box and suites, and accommodate expanded offices and training facilities.

This was also the place where the seat license concept started. In 1929, Knute Rockne had threatened to retire over the subject of cost overruns on the stadium project. The president of the university, Father O'Donnell, was aware that Rockne offered his resignation about once a month, so he ignored the offer but came up with the idea of offering "reserved box seats". This idea raised about $150,000, which was about 20% of the total cost of the new stadium.
