That's good to hear that the lanterns will be back on again. I got pretty used to seeing them on during the testing phase and missed seeing that this last week. With all the changes, Chinatown is finally beginning to look the part.

Work has started on the above Gate and they will be completed over the next few weeks the above artist impression of what the gate will look like does not do it justice, the roof tiles on top of the gate will be a bright glazed gold and come from China underneath the roof the structure will be painted a bright fire engine Chinese red it will look amazing.

Centre Management of Australia Fair's Metro Chinatown redevelopment is expected to hand over the keys to prospect tennants of the centres refurbished Chinatown precinct in late Jan so that they can start fitting out there shops at the moment there is only the TAB and few shops trading in the new section but this will change from late Jan 2016 when the redevelopment opens fully, customers will also be able to walk thru to Chinatown and thru to Southport Central from Australia Fair.

Don't start slapping each other on the back yet. The businesses need to remain there and be viable for the precinct to take hold. I am hopeful there is a decent budget in GC tourism and council for events and marketing so events can be held in this new precinct, like Chinese new year, Buddha festival etc etc.

I agree Sam and I do know that Council does have a decent marketing budget for Chinatown festivals such as Chinese New Year as well as other Asian Festivals.

Chinatown was established by Dale Anderson from the Southport TAB and other local Southport CBD retailers because of the uncertainty at the time surrounding the Gold Coast Hospital site and the growing prominence of both Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach as key business areas it was a move aimed at reigniting interest in Southport's CBD and restoring the suburb's status as the city's key business hub.

Broadbeach has the convention centre and the casino and Surfers Paradise has the beach and nightclubs ... while Southport was losing its hospital and its CBD.

Mr Anderson and the Southport CBD retailers wanted something to replace that and bring people back into the CBD, by creating a lot of different restaurants and businesses. They were critisised back then because there were no Asian businesses in the precinct so had to start Chinatown from scratch.

The objective was to establish a street that honours all the Asian cultures and features different architectural and ornamental structures. Given they started from nothing and the area was full of empty run down shops and now most have been leased I am sure the precinct will take hold and be successful but it will take time.

Southport is our city's most multicultural suburb with thousands of overseas Asian students at Griffith University living and studying in the CBD so it is a perfect location for a Chinatown it is hoped the precinct won't be a burden on rate payers and in the future will not need any help from council but will grow organically much like Sunnybank in Brisbane has done a place tourist and locals will want to visit so as to experience Asian food, shopping and business.

Also the two Chinatown night projectors are now switched on they project colourful Asian art and images onto the walls of two buildings in Chinatown if anyone is driving around the CBD at night take a look, one of the projectors is located in Davenport Street the other in Young Street.

Great photos Taroom, but I have to agree, they are really a bit too big, even for my 24" iMac screen. It is very easy to shrink them on upload using imgur (desktop version), just click the Auto resize drop down box. I usually select the 17-inch monitor option.

Construction Update – Harmony Paifang / Han Gate Install – Gold Coast Chinatown

Installation of the Harmony Paifang / Han Gate is scheduled to continue this month at the corner of Young and Scarborough St’s.

Curing of the footings is now complete and install of the two towers will now begin.

As a part of install, night works are required between Monday 11/1/2016 and Friday 15/1/2016, 6pm to 6am. During this time:
· Young Street east will be effected with road closures and detours (6pm – 6am)
· Davenport Street will be effected with one way traffic diversions (6pm – 6am)

The majority of construction works will occur during the day, Monday 11/1/2016 to Friday 29/1/2016, 6am to 6pm. Day works will not require road closures.

These works will be contained within the fenced construction zones on the footpaths. Construction works include stone tiling of tower columns, install of carved wooden sections, ceramic tiling of roof, installation of plaques and decorative brass. Some construction noise is expected, but will be mitigated wherever possible.

The above email was sent to my work today from the Gold Coast City Council.
