Stakeholders identify 15 tourism priorities in Sri Lanka

Mar 20, 2017 (LBO) – Key public and private sector tourism stakeholders in Sri Lanka have identified 15 priority projects to boost and sustain tourism growth over the next three years.
A full day workshop to identify these priorities was held at Temple Trees last week organised by the Ministry of Policy Development and Economic Affairs.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Tourism Development Minister, John Amaratunga, and Deputy Tourism Minister, Arundika Fernando participated in the workshop conducted under the Government’s Economic Delivery Programme.
The programme aims to accelerate key economic outcomes over the next 3 years including an increase in median income, private sector job creation, foreign and domestic investment, exports and government revenue.
Under this programme, tourism has been selected as one of six areas for acceleration. The other areas are: agriculture, manufacturing, investment acceleration, digital economy and government revenue.
The government has also set up a “Delivery Unit,” called the Central Programme Management Unit (CPMU), to support the implementation of the Economic Delivery Programme, a statement said.
More than 150 tourism industry representatives engaged in brain storming sessions to kick start implementation of the government’s Tourism Vision 2025 and Tourism Strategic Plan 2017-2020. The audience spanned a diverse group of sub-sectors within the travel and tourism industry, with both large and boutique, Sri Lankan and international players represented.
Similarly, the public sector was represented not only by the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies, but also other government agencies that have an impact on the sector such as the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ministry of Western Megapolis Development, Central Cultural Fund, Department of Wildlife Conservation, Police etc.
The participants worked through the day in joint public-private teams to identify potential solutions for addressing the main challenges faced by the industry and developed a preliminary list of 15 prioritised projects to implement within the next 1 to 3 years. The main goal is to ensure Sri Lanka doubles its tourism sector earnings from the present $3.5bn in 2016 to $7 bn by 2020.
At the conclusion of the workshop a selection of the most impactful projects were presented to the Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism who will regularly review progress to ensure rapid and effective implementation.
Some of the top projects were:
• Improve international air connectivity to priority markets (from 80 to 130 flights per day) through more direct flights, open skies policy, competitive landing and parking fees, incentivising low-cost airlines and smoother immigration and check-in procedures.
• Work with public and private stakeholders to create a “Colombo Calendar” of events which tourists can access across multiple channels (e.g., pick up from hotels or in the airports, access online, get notifications over social media).
• Fast-track tailored destination marketing campaigns in the key source markets; initiate a digital marketing campaign in next 1-2 months, as a precursor to the upcoming global campaign.
Meanwhile a Tourism “Delivery Lab” is to be set up as a follow up to the workshop. This lab will engage in short-burst, intensive implementation plan development sessions that aim to translate the identified project ideas into implementable plans.
Private and public sector leaders were asked to commit to the Tourism Delivery Lab, by sending representatives with specific expertise to support implementation planning and kick-off the projects.
More than 38 private sector companies and 48 public sector leaders committed their departments/agencies to support the Delivery Lab to ensure bottlenecks and barriers are removed.

April tourist arrivals up 17.5% after two-month fall

Reuters: Tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka rose in April, after falling in the previous two months, as the island nation’s airport in the capital reopened, Government data released on Thursday showed.

Arrivals in the first four months, however, have risen 6.1% compared to the same period last year.

Until January, arrivals had risen for 93 consecutive months since a nearly three-decade-long civil war ended in May 2009.

Tourism accounts for close to 5% of Sri Lanka’s economy.

The decline in the previous two months, analysts said, was due to inconvenience and long waiting time at the main airport, which was closed for three months through 6 April for eight hours a day for runway renovations. The renovations resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

Tourist arrivals and revenue from tourism hit record highs in 2016, with annual arrivals jumping 14% to a record 2.05 million.

Revenue in 2016 hit $ 3.4 billion, beating the previous record of $ 2.98 billion posted in 2015, Central Bank data showed.

Rise in April tourist arrivals augurs well for industry : Amaratunga

An upbeat Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Minister on Friday spoke of the increasing tourist arrivals, stressing that the industry now needs to maintain the momentum.

Minister John Amaratunga speaking at the Inauguration of the 7th edition of the Sancharaka Udawa exhibition organised by the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) said that the trend displays the ‘tremendous potential’ the country has, while noting the need to maintain the newfound momentum.

“We have to keep the momentum going and ensure that the numbers go up,” the Minister said, adding that steps are being taken to cater to an increasing number of tourist arrivals in the country. Amaratunge also pointed to the importance of the tourism industry in a country looking at a large debt.

The Minister made these remarks in relation to the recent government statistics which placed the April tourist arrivals at a 17.5% increase compared to last year. The Minister noted that in 2010, tourist arrivals amounted to a mere 500,000, but have, as of today, increased to 2 million. According to recent statistics, last year’s tourist arrivals were 2,050,832 and between January-April 2017 alone, 765,202 tourist arrivals were recorded. The Minister also noted that this year the largest numbers of tourists were from India, followed by China.

“The Potential is enormous. It is up to the hoteliers - star hoteliers, boutique hotels - other establishments, restaurants, etc. to provide a good service to ensure that tourists who come to Sri Lanka will go back with a good message that Sri Lanka is at its best.” On Sancharaka Udawa, the Minister highlighted the importance of such an exhibition for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry as a platform for small scale as well as larger industries to showcase their products and services. SLAITO President Devindra Seneratne said that the exhibition has grown over the years, and this year has expanded further. “The show as a whole has been running year on year, and we have seen an increase in both exhibitors and visitors. The venue has for the past couple of years been the iconic BMICH and over the past years we have had the ability to increase the floor space and expand the area of the show to accommodate the increasing demand from our exhibitors.”

The exhibition which was frequented by 10,000 people last year, boasts 240 stalls this year.

Sancharaka Udawa primarily aims to promote small and medium scale services in the tourism industry. As such it showcases both popular hotel accommodations and other leisure related activities as well as many smaller tourism establishments, enabling these to “to interact with inbound tour operators and the public to create greater awareness of their tourism product, transact businesses and sign off agreements” said Seneratne. This year the exhibition will also feature a series of lectures related to the tourism industry which are open to the public. These lectures will touch on topics such as Sri Lankan tourism and wildlife, digital marketing, the importance of learning tourism, and career opportunities in the hospitality industry. Sancharaka Udawa will have its second day today (6 May) at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre, BMICH.

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is flourishing: Survey
The latest islandwide poll conducted by research firm Kantar TNS, for business magazine LMD, reveals that nearly 90% of respondents believe that Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is booming. They cite the higher inflow of tourists to the country and their ability to visit any part of the island in the post-war era as key reasons for this.

A notable majority (75%) of survey participants also believe that our service standards are extremely high, while 10% say otherwise and 15% sit on the fence, so to speak.

However, sentiments more mixed when it comes to the question of whether hotels in the outstations are world-class – 44% of respondents believe this to be the case, while 37% disagree and nearly a fifth are ‘unsure’.

More than six-in-10 respondents (66%) believe that Sri Lanka offers great value to travellers. However, those in the naysayers’ camp (14%) note that ‘foreigners are being exploited and robbed,’ and that ‘there are insufficient facilities for tourists to obtain good service.’

Citizens point to upgrading hotels and resorts, improving service standards, offering better value for money, spreading destination awareness, introducing new entertainment options, and developing roads and highways as measures that could be taken to improve our tourism product.

LMD’s publisher, Media Services, says the May edition of the pioneering business magazine has been released to leading supermarkets and bookstores in Colombo and the outstations.

Its Cover Story features an exclusive interview with the CEO of HSBC (Sri Lanka and Maldives) Mark Prothero, who shares in-depth insights into the banking and finance spheres amid shifting global undercurrents (for the full story, log onto www.LMD.lk)

Tourist arrivals up 2.5% in August, key markets dip

Sri Lanka’s tourist arrivals rose marginally by 2.5% to 190,928 in August from a year earlier, largely affected by a sharp drop in visitors from key tourism sourcing markets including China, Germany and France, Government data released yesterday showed.

According to data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), cumulative arrivals of tourists in the first eight months rose 3.5% to over 1.4 million (1,406,854) compared to 1.3 million in the same period last year, continuing the growth momentum established in 2010.

India continues to lead arrival figures with 233,120 followed by China (189,696), the UK (141,378), Germany (89,459) and France (73,081).

Visitors from India, Sri Lanka’s largest generating market, rose 27.9% to 31,220 for the first eight months of the year. Although tourists from Western Europe climbed 1.6% to 65,949 in August, arrivals from France and Germany fell 0.7% to 10,730 and 10.1% to 10,993 respectively. UK visitors rose 7% to 21,903, while tourists from The Netherlands increased 20.5% to 5,697.

Tourist arrivals from East Asia rose 2.4% to 42,417 while Chinese visitors continue to drop 3.7% to 26,507 breaking off from a trend of double digit growth seen in recent years. Tourists from China during the period of January to August fell 0.7% to 189,696 compared to 190,992 in the same period last year.

Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga asserted the decline seen in key sourcing markets was a result of adverse publicity on dengue outbreak and some countries issuing travel advisories.

He also claimed that National Carrier SriLankan Airlines withdrawing flight schedules from destinations that benefitted the tourism industry for years had affected arrivals.

Amaratunga however stood firm on the country’s tourist arrival target of 2.5 million by the end of the year and expressed confidence that it could even exceed this projection. “You have to aim high in order to achieve somewhere,” he told journalists in Colombo yesterday.

Despite the challenges faced by the industry due to floods, the closure of the Bandaranaike International Airport and dengue outbreak, he said arrivals were now picking up.

“I think the season is going to be very good. It might even exceed our estimated target of 2.5 million tourist arrivals,” he added.

Tourism accounts for close to 5% of Sri Lanka’s economy. Tourist arrivals and revenue hit record highs in 2016, with annual arrivals jumping 14% to a record 2.05 million.

According to the Central Bank, tourist arrivals recorded an increase of 4.5%, year-on-year, with 123,351 tourists arriving during June 2017. On a cumulative basis, tourist arrivals grew by 4.8% during the first half of 2017 compared to the corresponding period of 2016.

Following the same trend in tourist arrivals, earnings from tourism also increased to $ 211.6 million in June 2017. Consequently, on a cumulative basis, earnings from tourism increased by 4.8% to $ 1,733.6 million during the first half of 2017.

I am honestly sick to death with white worshipping in Asia. Why is it that most of us treat whites like gods??!!! We worship their skin colour, language, habits but we don't learn from them. No matter how white wannabe some sri lankans are, they never learn qualities like individuality and the mere fact that English is just another language and then occasionally we speak some mumbo jumbo about the "great 2000 years of history" we have.

'Foreigners Only' hotels to be prosecuted

The Tourist Police with the assistance of the Local Government bodies, the Tourism Development Authority and the Tourist Board will conduct raids on restaurants, villas and tourist lodges in the southern tourist belt that cater only to foreigners and discriminate against Sri Lankans under the directive of the Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faizer Musthapha.

The Management of tourist facilities who were found discriminative on Sri Lankans during the raids will be prosecuted under the common law and Tourist Promotion law and their trade permits will be withdrawn.

A crucial discussion was held at the Local Government and Provincial Councils Ministry chaired by Minister Musthapha, took this decision to prevent what he described as the outcome of a ‘slavish or colonial mentality’.

Minister Musthapha pointed out that a large number of villas, restaurants and tourist lodges from Wadduwa to Tangalle have put up boards ‘Tourist Only’ in front of their facilities on the Southern Coast and restricted access to Sri Lankans which is a violation of the Constitution, human rights and confronts the dignity and self respect of Sri Lankans.

“This cannot be accepted. We have experienced second hand treatment on us at some times at certain countries as Sri Lankans. It is impossible to keep exclusive areas for tourists alone and bar Sri Lankans which is an affront to our national dignity,” Minister Musthapha stressed.

Tourism arrivals hit 2.1m in 2017

  • Growth a lackluster 3.2%, only 65,595 travelers more than 2016
  • Drought, floods, dengue and runway repairs dampen growth
  • India remains top arrival source, China dips 1% and UK up 7.3%
  • December grew by 8.8% reviving hopes for a strong winter start to 2018

Despite a tough year, tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka reached an all-time high of 2,116,407 in 2017 according to the latest data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), but recorded marginal growth of 3.2% after adverse weather, dengue and a partially closed airport earlier in the year hampered growth.

The arrival figure for 2017 represents a 3.2% growth or 65,595 more arrivals over the preceding year when the figure crossed the 2 million mark for the first time.

The higher number of arrivals has been achieved despite serious setbacks to the tourism industry right throughout 2017. The first setback was the partial closure of the country’s main airport from January to April resulting in many airlines either scaling down operations or completely halting flights to Colombo.

Just weeks after the airport reopened in April, the southern half of the country experienced devastating floods that cut off access to many resort areas resulting in adverse international media publicity that had an impact on forward bookings.

This was followed by an unprecedented dengue epidemic centered around the commercial capital Colombo that lasted several months, which too resulted in negative reports on international media resulting in at least one country issuing a travel advisory based on the issue.

Further flooding and a severe drought in the central and northern parts of the country in the latter part of the year added to the climatic woes suffered by the tourism industry during the year which according to industry sources impacted forward bookings.

According to SLTDA data, arrivals in December grew from 224,791 in 2016 to 244,536 in 2017 reflecting an 8.8% growth rate which augurs well for the winter season ahead.India continued to be the top source market with 384,628 arrivals (up 7.8%) followed by China with 268,952 (down 1%) and UK 201,879 (up 7.3%).

Of the total number of arrivals 2,085,272 reached the country via BIA in Katunayake, 5,491 via MRIA in Mattala, 10,569, via Colombo Harbour, 14,099 via Galle Harbour and 976 via other ports according to statistics from the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Would have been cool if they had a put a QR barcode so people could scan it on their phones and read up more about Sri Lanka tourism. I've seen some adverts that do this and they have websites which don't need wifi. Gives something for people to look at when they're on the tube.
