It is reported in PW that Halabi mulls the demolition and refurbishment among options at Aviva Tower.

ha demolition would cause a rumble on here, I wouldnt mind demolition if something taller and even more elegant were put in place.
demolition!!! thats mad. that building MUST be listed. it is the best example in the entire country of international architecture.

I agree. Plus if it is demolished, I can see someone somewhere demanding the plaza in front of it be sold off and built on, which must never ever happen.

This looks like a refurbished tower block ?

Completely agree.

And Darren raises a good point about the plaza. It would be simply disastrous if they built on that.

Yep, bad idea.....I thought it was listed anyway!

I think its on a list to be recommended for listing in the near future if that makes sense?
I understand the Baker Street scheme is nearly fully let. Has it started construction yet? If so some pics would be great if anyone hangs about in that part of London.

Best example of a 90s reclad of international architecture.

^^^ I went there after that bomb. There was paper being blown out of the shattered windows of St Helens and T42. In those days computer paper was in a concertinered bundle and long ribbons of it were floating through the air like giant snakes...it was like a disaster movie.
Not many towers left in the City skyline that haven't been reclad at some point.
Just out of speculation... if it were developed during th enext property cycle, would it likely be over 250m in height? It is extremely central withing the cluster. Not saying it will be though... just speculation.
Damn should have gone down the bookies and put a bet on.

I could see the current trend going so far that once Leadenhall, Heron and Bishopsgate are built the developers could reclad or demolish St Helens, 99 Bishopsgate and even Tower 42.
Just thought I'd post a few pics:

Edit: Jef has posted better ones:)

I hope they don't do a Draper's Gardens and replace it with a boring midrise scheme. If they demolish St. Helens, they better build a whopper :D (as if)

I am not sure I would support a replacement unless it was atleast Heron Tower quality. And the plaza would have to remain (or create some kind of indoor public plaza like Leadenhall), and it will have to be 150m+. I'm not trying to be obsessed with height here, but it is an EXTREMELY central location perfect for a 200m-250m+ building if ever redeveloped, one of the most perfect sites around there actually.

I personally can't see them building on the plaza.

I am not sure a replacement is necessary or desirable....this is setting a worrying trend...who thought that St Helens would one day not exist.

Where is this news report by the way? Is it not standard to publish the article with the thread where possible?
Isn't this a conservation area anyway?

With St Andrews Undershaft and the other churches nearby. I doubt they could build over the plaza.
