What does Collier have in common with Miami-Dade that would make them want to do that?

Usually a group that wants to secede is driven by a very strong commonality and sense of identity.

Geography

Meh, just ramblings by some people with an axe to grind at this point. It is hard enough to get steam behind a city being organized or secede from the larger city, let alone a new state. There really is no precident either, except for Virginia/W. Virginia, but that was really due to the War of Northern Agression than otherwise. Hey, if it happens it happens, but I would not pin my hopes on it. Heck, it might even benefit Tampa in the way of federal funds for projects.

What an bunch of idiots . . . though I would love to see a state election run by people from Broward and Palm Beach. That would be very entertaining.

I think Central Florida should be its own state as well. Heck, we'll span both coasts by including Tampa and Daytona. Can you imagine that cash cow? We can put the capitol right in the middle, next to the new/proposed CSX intermodal rail yard in Winter Haven! Now everyone in the state of Central Florida can be happy.

If it meant Lee County would get more money, then I support it. We always seem to be the first area where projects get cut when finances are tight. Unfortunately, I see the tri-county South Florida area benefitting from this at Lee's expense.

I should add that I would much rather be grouped with Sarasota and Tampa instead of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Since when was St. Lucie not South Florida? I'd even go as far as to consider Vero Beach the official beginning of South Florida.

I would include Indian River & St. Lucie Counties as well as they are basically future homes to sprawl north from Palm Beach and Martin Counties. Miami-Dade would still be the odd-ball county in its "new" state but the other counties would all have a lot in common with each other (similar needs, similar priorities). Miami-Dade would just be happy to finally be getting a least somewhere close to an even split in taxes sent to the state vs services recieved.

Am I wrong in thinking that this is silly? Every state in the nation has money generating areas that have to (to some degree) pay for the rest of the state. I hardly think Miami Dade is paying for Orlando in this case. But both Miami and Orlando are probably paying for infastructure in Ocala and Destin... I'm sure in the past NYC has wanted to break away from upstate for very similar reasons. It just comes down to - a politician wanting to rant and rave about something for not getting their way.

I see nothing wrong with a region wanting to seperate if they think they can do a better job of self rule. The same goes for parts of cities that feel they are treated unfairly. Seperate and see if you can make it on your own. That will stop the bitching and moaning. "let them have cake"

as for the "*******" comment, if people think that PBCo and Co. are nothing but rich affluent folks, then they are sorely mistaken. It's just like any other metro.

as for seceding, well, there's a similar attitude in ILL re Chicago and the rest of the state. But at least there, Chicago is a real city that has it's stuff together contrasted with a mainly rural rest of the state. Here, there are 3 other major metros that easily out-populate SoFla, with industries and military operations that do so as well; it's a different climate than in ILL.

Well then City States could be the wave of the future. I'm all for it.

This is not exclusive to Florida. The same thing happens in California and other states where one area is substantially larger and contributes more than it recieves. Nobody can deny the politicians of small town Florida seem to resent South Florida :lol: for some reason.

I know lots of people who live in Collier and visit the southeast at least once a week. :dunno:
I say break the state in three. :banana:

anyway, since we're on the subject of this whole seccession issue, which alot of times has to do with how homogenous the pop. in question is compared to the area it's trying to secede from, people should accept that rural Florida does not have the corner on the "*******" market (since the comment came from someone north of the Mason-Dixon line). PA is no stranger to the phenomenon either, nor is the rest of the NE or Midwest-- We've all mostly been there; and we've all seen them.

But it is true that small-towners in FLA do for the most part not care much for Miami. I've seen that; moreso than their disdain for Tampa, Orlando and Jax.

I would say it's b/c of the ethnic fabric, but I think moreso it's b/c of the distance--- it is way down at the SE tip of FLA.
