With an educated population, New York City, some great small towns like Saratoga Springs, Skeneatles, and Pittsford, and centrally located to visit lots of great cities in other states nearby, New York is the best place to live.

Huge state, from Buffalo to Long Island. 19 million strong.

New York is the state that I feel most connected to, other than the one I live in. I lived there for four years, and visit NYC often. Honestly though, my travels to Upstate are pretty much limited to pit stops on the way to Toronto. Great state, obviously.

It's a state of contrasts, more so than any other state in the Northeast. It's hard sometimes to believe that Midtown Manhattan and the rural areas upstate are the same state. It's a state that can't be summed up in one sentence.

I am pretty sure that California is the most diverse state in terms of race, ethnicity, and foreign-born population.

I have had the pleasure of seeing most of this great state. I was born on Eastern Long Island, and my family moved all that way, 450 miles away to Potsdam NY just a mere 10 miles south of the Canadian border. For 10 years we drove back and fourth between the two locations for summer vacations, christmas break, spring break etc to see the grandparents.

I have been to the thousand Islands countless times(BOLDT CASTLE ROCKS), and gone "fossil hunting" along the shores of Lake Ontario. I celebrate new Years in Saratoga Springs. I attended world cup events in Lake Placid. tried my hand at log rolling at paul Smiths. tasted wine in the finger lakes, Niagara region, and lonf Island. :) lost myself in the Falls, partied in Auora(Buffalo burb) my rugby team kicked ass at Oswego, New Paltz, Geneseo, the Maratime academy and amazingly enough West Point. I have climbed some of and skied most of the mountains in the Adarondacks. I love this state!!!

I have been to every major city except for Binghampton for some reason?
I Heart NY!
I have lived in CT for a year already, but my drivers liscence still says NY.

When I moved to New Zealand for a while I rarely referred to myself as American. I am a New Yorker before I am an American.

We are the Empire State!

Now some stuff about NY.
The term "Hooker" was coined in NYC
Most of the major cities in America were founded by NY business men. an example is Minneanapolis founded as a fur trading post.

ok gotta work

I was always wondering if I could take those Pure Michigan commercials and relate them to New York State and what it has to offer. I think it would go well, instead of Pure Michigan, make it "Naturally New York".

Despite its sour economy, Western New York is absolutely beautiful, I loved the forested areas and creeks between Buffalo and Rochester on Route 33 and Route 31. WNY also has nice little villages and towns! I loved the paved shoulders on the highways, perfect for bicycling!

I have been to NYC, I love it there for its big city amenities and had a blast at the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, and seeing Wrestlemania XX at MSG.

Buffalo, city with tons of character in its buildings, its history, and its people. Where else can you get some of the finest architecture of buildings in the United States all along a huge waterfront. As well, I have walked around the many nice, LIVEABLE areas of the city, and it feels more like a small town than a big city, believe me, Buffalo is very liveable. I could even live there if I moved to the U.S.

Rochester, like Chicago, one of very few cities with a river running through downtown and has to be one of the very few with a little falls like Niagara downtown, and has one of the most modern, clean downtowns of any city I have ever seen, and the area is picturesque, ironic for the image capital of the world.

I've driven through Syracuse, its downtown skyline from the freeway looks modern like Rochester and urban, too. Scenery looks nice.

Driven through Binghamton, didn't really see much of the city, but its setting in the Catskill mountains (is that what they are), gives it a nice feel.

Never been to Utica or Albany, but will go someday, particularly to Albany. Maybe stop in Utica for Tomato pie and/or half moons like Spooky873 tells us.

Albany, looks very nice for a capital city and to have the tallest building in the state outside of NYC is impressive, I have seen many historical buildings downtown, and looks very urban, indeed in its many neighborhoods of houses, like a bigger city.

Niagara Falls, ghetto, yes, the city has seen better days, but it has much potential. Particularly in the areas near the falls and hopefully the new casino hotel might help.

Those are just some of the reasons to LOVE NEW YORK STATE!

I probably will go Upstate for college. UBuffalo, UAlbany, Rochester U, Ithaca College. Just to see what Upstate has to offer. Either upstate or PA. If I like it enough I will probably stay there. :) I want fresh open air, and snow. Unlike Downstate where eveyrthing is so crowded, even the suburbs feel urban haha.

Buffalo, Roch, Ithaca, Pittsburgh, Philly Here I come in 2 years!

Here's a combination of threads I did of some smaller NY cities.

Thought I'd repost some pics from a trip a couple of years ago. Jamestown is in the southwestern corner of upstate New York. It has a population of about 31,000 with about 140,000 in the metro. So here ya go.

Thought I'd post some pics (not very many of each city - sorry) of three upstate cities not often seen. Olean (pop~15,000), Elmira(pop~30,000), and Cortland (pop~17,000). I think Olean and Cortland are holding their own fairly well, but Elmira has been on a downslide for quite a while.

Thought I'd show a few pics of smaller cities in upstate New York not seen very often. The first is a very few pics of Amsterdam (pop~18,000). This town was rather depressing. The downtown seemed rather dead, and just a few blocks up the hill from downtown had a bunch of abandoned housing units.

Kingston (pop~23,000) was a much nicer city. The commercial districts were in three distinct locations: Upper, Middle, and Lower. The middle district was rather empty and past its good old days.

Lower Kingston - by the river (Hudson), it looked as if the section had hit hard times but has undergone a renovation. Kind of seperate from most of the town, but I can see the potential for good times ahead.

Upper Kingston - had a colonial feel and vibrant vibe to it. I really liked this place.
