RAF jets will wow the crowds at Sunderland Airshow

Published on Sunday 22 April 2012 12:58

FASTEN your seatbelts – this year’s Sunderland International Airshow is really taking off.

Earlier this month, the Echo revealed how the world-famous Red Arrows were returning to the show.

Now, they are to be joined by front-line jets from the Royal Air Force, with fly-bys from the Typhoon and Tornado aircraft.

Organised by Sunderland City Council, the airshow is now in its 24th year and widely recognised as one of the largest free events of its kind, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators to the coastline along Roker and Seaburn.

Sunderland City Council leader Paul Watson said: “This year’s airshow line-up is really shaping up with some premier attractions, the Red Arrows are already scheduled for appearances on both days and now we are set to see and hear the Tornado and Typhoon.

“The RAF is taking a lead role in this year’s event and it will be showcasing the training, excellence and professionalism of its personnel with all these displays.”

The Airshow is getting closer, --this from the Sunderland Echo, --

Breitling wingwalkers

Published on Wednesday 20 June 2012 08:00

THESE wingwalkers are the latest addition to the line-up that will thrill the crowds at this year’s Sunderland International Airshow.

The Breitling team will take to the skies on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday July 22 to perform a breathtaking sequence of formation loops and rolls, while daring wingwalkers perform acrobatics on the wings.

The 1940s Stearman biplanes will roar through the skies at speeds of up to 140mph, each with a wingwalker climbing around the aircraft and performing handstands while waving to the crowd below.

For the impressive “Cockpit Lady” pass, the wingwalkers leave the safety of their static harness and climb down to the cockpit during flight.

While standing in front of the pilot’s windscreen they will perform a balletic pose as they soar above the seafront at 100mph.

This year’s Sunderland International Airshow promises to be one of the best yet.

Red Arrows at Sunderland Air Show 22/07/12 + some planes from recent shows

Went to the Air Show Day 2 only to see The Red Arrows who were starting the event

Group of 7 Arrows started show at 1200 (delayed to 1204 due to Emirates takeoff at Newcastle ) due to having to get to North Wales for later show and were on display for approx near 20 mins - to be followed by approx 20+ minutes gap before next event

Just heard at 1720 an interview with Show Director in which she stated the Arrows (in 9 formation) made another appearance later in day

These photographs taken by myself in the period noted above (hosted on Photobucket)

Unfortunately could not get a good picture of combined 800 mph closure speed pass involving 2 planes but this is a flavour of the display

There is some dicussion on Skybar 22/07/12 afternoon concerning how to spark up the display for 25th in 2013

I append a few pictures taken by myself 2009, 2010 of particular planes that "performed well" including for NewcastleStu some of the Vulcan (again hosted on Photobucket)

AND this being "merged pictures" involving planes that dod not fly at same times

The best display I have seen weas either in Year 1 or 2 and think from memory was the Royal Jordanian Airforce Team of 4 doing aerobatics - superb

Sunderland Airshow Vulcan bomber to make final flight The Vulcan B2

Published on Tuesday 16 October 2012 13:52

A STAR of Sunderland’s airshow is taking to the skies for the last time.

Next year will be the final season for the world’s only flying Vulcan bomber, which also made a fly past during the Queen’s visit to Sunderland in July.

Supporters have been told that the much-loved aeroplane’s flying life is over, as repairs become too complex and costly.

The Vulcan XH558 underwent an award-winning restoration in 2007, believed to be the most technically complex ever undertaken and then was granted a set number of flying hours.

At the end of next year’s display season, six years after the return-to-flight, its current flying life will have been almost completely used up.

Lift off: Sunderland International Airshow is officially launched ... in Newcastle

THE 25th Sunderland International Airshow was officially launched today – in the unlikely surroundings of Newcastle Airport.

The airshow takes place on July 26, 27 and 28, and guest-of-honour at today’s event was a Tucano T1 – a modified version of the Brazilian Embraer EMB-312 Tucano aircraft.

Hundreds of thousands flock to the 25th Sunderland International Airshow

http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/...th-sunderland-international-airshow-1-5898696

CROWDS were treated to gold standard displays of aerial acrobatics at the silver anniversary of Sunderland International Airshow.

Daredevil antics from the Red Arrows in the skies over the city’s coastline opened the 25th annual airshow.

The nine-strong team twisted and turned through a series of stomach churning moves, including the Carousel and the Feathered Arrow.

Wearing a distinctive red overall Mike Ling, squadron coordinator, said it was a “privilege” to come back to Sunderland.

Known by call sign Red 10, he was paying his second visit to the airshow, which is expected to draw in hundreds of thousands of people to Sunderland’s seafront across the weekend.

He said: “We love displaying here and the crowd is always huge. What is nice is the amount of support that the North East shows the armed forces and we are representing the armed forces, so coming here to Sunderland is fantastic.”

Cheers, 'the pointless parasite' is me by the way!

It was a good weekend though. I missed the first day as I was in Seaham at the film 'festival'. There was some nasty dark clouds on Sunday, but plenty of sunny intervals.

Four-day Sunderland Airshow would leave residents ‘under siege’

Councillors Bob Francis, George Howe and John Wiper are concerned about the effect of a four day Sunderland airshow on the people who live near the sea front site.

AIRSHOW-WEARY residents and businesses have given the thumbs down to plans to spread the event over four days.

While this year’s extravaganza –which kicked off on Friday night with the Red Arrows and ended on Sunday - proved a massive hit with visitors basking in sunshine on Seaburn seafront, proposals to extend the length of the show have met with a cooler response.

Stylish start planned for Sunderland Airshow

THE entertainment line-up for this year’s Sunderland International Airshow promises to be a feast of fun.

The main flying programme, on Saturday and Sunday, will be preceded by the free event at Cliffe Park, starting at 6pm on Friday, July 25.

One of the UK’s most sought after Beatles tribute acts – Them Beatles – are set to wow the crowds, during a show that will give audiences the opportunity, as John Lennon once said, to clap their hands and rattle their jewellery.

Supporting the group on the night, with some fantastic a cappella and close harmony singing, will be North East professional barbershop girl group The Shoeshop Quartet.
