I couldn't find a leisure thread so have opened this one.

SAFC, the University and the Council are in talks to extend the highly successful Aquatic Centre to include indoor court facilities etc.

Is this an actual extension to the aquatic centre or a seperate building? As I think there was something like that originally planned as part of the sports village complex

FASTEN your seatbelts – this year’s Sunderland International Airshow is really taking off.

Earlier this month, the Echo revealed how the world-famous Red Arrows were returning to the show.

Now, they are to be joined by front-line jets from the Royal Air Force, with fly-bys from the Typhoon and Tornado aircraft.

Organised by Sunderland City Council, the airshow is now in its 24th year and widely recognised as one of the largest free events of its kind, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators to the coastline along Roker and Seaburn.

Sunderland City Council leader Paul Watson said: “This year’s airshow line-up is really shaping up with some premier attractions, the Red Arrows are already scheduled for appearances on both days and now we are set to see and hear the Tornado and Typhoon.

“The RAF is taking a lead role in this year’s event and it will be showcasing the training, excellence and professionalism of its personnel with all these displays.”

On the stadium village development framework it looks as though it is a seperate building adjascent to the aquatic centre. There also looks like there is plans for outdoor courts/ pitches. The documents for this can be found at: http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2115 the main document of interest is the 2mb file. It is in extremely finite detail with regards to building elevations expectations of phases etc. Im supprised there isnt a section on the site specifically for the stadium village development(s).

There's some interesting and good stuff on their, ----hope at least some of the proposed Developments come to fruition, cheers.
I thought that a lot of the stadium village developments were linked to SAFC getting the world cup so if stuff still happens that will be great.

I don't know, --there might have been some Developments dependant on getting the WC, ----but from what I've read, ---- they would like to have a multi-use Leisure Well-Being Complex, --and Wellness Centre, ---there is mention of re-aligning Keir Hardy Way---replacing the roundabout with a signalised Junction --creating a Gateway into the site, --and which would also provide an opportunity for a Flagship Hotel and Leisure Development, --- it would be great if some of these happen.

I would be well happy if that happened.
This is the only thread I could think of to post this article, ---will try and get down to see her.

Sunderland’s adopted warship HMS Ocean sails in at dawn + VIDEO

Published on Thursday 24 May 2012 08:55

AS the sun rises on Sunderland, HMS Ocean majestically makes her way into the Wear.

This spectacular early morning picture shows the Royal Navy’s largest vessel arriving in the city today.

Echo photographer Kevin Brady captured the ship’s arrival at Corporation Quay just before 6am.

Ocean’s four-day stay is the seventh time she has visited the city.

Meticulous planning ensured the amphibious assault ship berthed alongside the port’s deepwater quay without a hitch.

Two Class-1 pilots were assigned to guide the vessel into port, while four Svitzer tugs helped her into harbour.

A squad from Sunderland Foyboatmen’s Association then made her fast to quayside bollards.

Captain Kevin Ullah, harbourmaster, said: “The safe navigation of HMS Ocean within the port is of paramount importance and entails a huge team effort involving port personnel and supporting marine services.”

He added: “Nothing was left to chance.

“A great deal of pre-planning goes into an operation such as this, and we have been liaising with the Royal Navy at every step of the way.”

LANDLUBBERS and those with sea legs can both enjoy a treat this weekend.

With HMS Ocean docked in the city, crew members are planning to cram a lot into a busy few days.

The official parade of Sunderland’s adopted warship was due to get under way this afternoon in the city centre, but that hasn’t stopped ship personnel taking part in a host of other activities.

About 100 young people took part in a Meet the Marines event yesterday when they joined the Royal Marines Commando Recruitment Team on board the ship.

Members of the crew also visited Castlegreen School, Ocean’s adopted school, to meet students and talk about life on board.

FRANKIE & the Heartstrings are on song for the city’s Olympic torch celebrations.

The five-piece will play a set in Herrington Country Park on Saturday, June 16, as part of a host of events to mark the historic torch relay through Sunderland.

The band, who reached the Top 40 with their debut album Hunger last year, will take a break from recording their second album to perform the set.

Frontman Frankie Francis, from Houghton, said: “The only other time I’ve seen music performed in the park was for Radio 1’s Big Weekend. It’s a brilliant venue.

“Providing the weather’s right, it should be full of people enjoying themselves. The best thing is, it’s all free, which is brilliant.”

A YACHT club is to hold a boat parade to celebrate its centenary.

Members of Sunderland Yacht Club, in Roker, will take to the water this weekend to mark its 100th anniversary.

Alan Dixon, commodore of the club, said: “Our parade will sail past the club and it is a fitting way to celebrate 100 years of our club. It will provide a colourful spectacle from the riverside.”

The club will also throw open its doors for a special open day, where visitors can take part in taster sessions on a dinghy or yacht.

“Our open days are now an annual event and allow anyone with an interest to try sailing as a sport,” said Mr Dixon. “We hope that all our visitors on the day will enjoy our sport as much as we do.”

Mr Dixon said the River Wear was one of the earliest sailing centres. In 1837, it featured the first of the borough races, which included all water-based craft and preceded the formation of the first yacht club on the river.

Breitling wingwalkers

Published on Wednesday 20 June 2012 08:00

THESE wingwalkers are the latest addition to the line-up that will thrill the crowds at this year’s Sunderland International Airshow.

The Breitling team will take to the skies on Saturday, July 21 and Sunday July 22 to perform a breathtaking sequence of formation loops and rolls, while daring wingwalkers perform acrobatics on the wings.

The 1940s Stearman biplanes will roar through the skies at speeds of up to 140mph, each with a wingwalker climbing around the aircraft and performing handstands while waving to the crowd below.

For the impressive “Cockpit Lady” pass, the wingwalkers leave the safety of their static harness and climb down to the cockpit during flight.

While standing in front of the pilot’s windscreen they will perform a balletic pose as they soar above the seafront at 100mph.

This year’s Sunderland International Airshow promises to be one of the best yet.

I thought that a lot of the stadium village developments were linked to SAFC getting the world cup so if stuff still happens that will be great.
The plans for the sports complex have been about since 2005/6. The only things that has stopped them developing the site has been raising the necessary finances and the complications of Holmeside and the sale of Crowtree.
