Super deluxe Asian chains investing
Super deluxe Asian hotel chains – Aman Resorts, Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts and Alila Hotels & Resorts – are reportedly preparing to invest in northern Portugal and on the Algarve. Officials from Aman Resorts have visited properties in the Douro Valley (North). Adrian Zecha a senior executive in the chain has signed a partnership deal with Américo Amorim for an €800 million investment at Alqueva dam (south-east). This is a private deal with the cork millionaire and does not involve Amorim Turismo. Adrian Zecha also visited the Comporta estate owned by Espírito Santo Group on the Alentejo West Coast. Singapore-based Aman Resorts is one of the most expensive and exclusive chains in the world with portfolio hotels in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and similar Asian destinations. Banyan Tree, also Singapore-based, is reportedly well-advanced in discussions about investing in Portugal. The arrival of super luxury hotel brands is seen as significant for a country where “there is a severe shortage of top brand names”.
